Subject: IT'S GETTING HOT: ENDA, HRC and the politics of inclusion

Wow ! Things have moved fast in the past 24 hours since my last email about ENDA and how some members of Congress want to dump
Transgenders from employment non-discrimination protection.
Nine national organizations came together yesterday to make a joint statement in favor of transgender inclusion. Curiously missing from the
list was HRC. The HRC line is that they "did not assent." The National Lesbian & Gay Task Force, Stonewall Democrats, P-Flag and other
groups are holding strong.
The Task Force is calling for an audio press conference for Monday. If you want to participate see details below.
Even Barney Frank is apparently weakening. You can read his comments at http://www house Qov/frank/ENDASentember2007.html. The
Washington Blade article about Frank's legislative maneuvering with two ENDAS is included below for your review.
Also, I include below the latest from lesbian Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, the Huffington Post's Lane Hudson, The National Center for
Transgender Equality, P-Flag, HRC's Joe Solmonese and last but not least, comments from our own Texas Phyllabuster, Phyllis Randolph
Frye
I would expect demonstrations at the National HRC Dinner and other HRC Dinners this fall. We fought this battle once before in the mid
1990's with Elizabeth Birch. There will be lots of hard feelings if HRC abandons Transgenders again.
After all, what's the Gay-BLT sandwich without the tomato?
More later,
-- Ted
PS: I'm copying the local HRC leaders in this email. Let's see some leadership.
Stonewall Democrats Stand for Inclusive ENDA
(Thursday, September 27, 2007)
The following statement was released by the Executive Directors of nine national LGBT organizations Thursday morning, in response to the article in the
Washington Blade posted Wednesday evening:
Our collective position remains clear and consistent regarding the status of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act. Our organizations oppose the removal of
protections for transgender people from ENDA. We would also oppose any bill that did not protect transgender people.
We are shocked and upset that, according to the Washington Blade, influential members of the House of Representatives have apparently made a decision to
remove protections for transgender people from the bill. If true, this decision was made without consultation with leaders of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender community.
While we don't doubt the sincerity of Congressional leadership's intent to take action and be helpful to the LGBT community, we cannot disagree more with this
strategy. We will continue to work with LGBT-supportive members of Congress to urge their colleagues to immediately drop this strategy.
