About 300 gays and lesbians Enterprises, the Black Tie Dinner
attended last Saturday's Robert Schwab Committee, former state District JudgeAward ceremonies held at the Dallas
Museum of Art.
Mica England, the Dallas lesbian
who challenged the Dallas Police
Department's hiring policy excluding
gays and lesbians (see related story on
page 1), and Dick Peeples, a long-time
board member and officer of the Texas
Human Rights Foundation, received the
Schwab Awards, presented annually by
THRF.
Peeples said his citation proved that
"each individual can make a difference."
Like several other speakers, he
encouraged audience members to
abandon the closet and live open and
honest lives.
"In my opinion,, it's extremely
important to be honest with yourself
about who you are. By being open with
your sexuality, you do not give away to
others the power to control you," he
stated. He also recommended "living in
the present, not the past. The past is
over and should not hold sway over our
current actions."
England, too, spoke of the value ofuenis weir, sCEU Di aven rnerprises,
accepts an award on behalf of his
company.

warm congratulations to all the award-
