Where Will We Be in 3,6,9 Years?Dear Friends,
During
these exciting
moments in
the history of
the Church
and Synagogue
Library
Association,
you play a vital
role!Lveyn oc rass On
Thursday, January 12, 10 CSLA represen-
tatives met with Les Robinson, a facilita-
tor from the Center for Congregational
Health, for a day-long strategic planning
session prior to the CSLA mid-winter
board meeting in Greensboro, NC. We
were looking for direction in planning
CSLA's short and long term goals in order
to provide our members with the best
services possible. Thanks to three donors,
the cost of this session did not come out
of the CSLA treasury.
We started by sharing our perceptions
of what CSLA looks like now and what
issues we see as needing to be addressed.
Four basic areas of concentration
emerged: Membership, Visibility, Funds,
and Structure. There is overlap in these
categories, but we managed to highlight
certain issues. Briefly:
Membership: We discussed ways of
increasing membership, clearly defining
the benefits of the organization to each
member, face-to-face contact with
members, strengths that chapters add to the
group, and the importance of recognizing
the volunteer work of our membership.
Visibility: We brainstormed about our
identity, the name of the organization and
the name of the bimonthly. How can we
publicize CSLA more effectively? For
example, our publications listing is now
distributed in a four page annotated
version. Reference was made to contin-
ued efforts to change and improve the
Web site. Do we need a separate Publicity
Chair? Additional venues for advertising
were explored.
Funds: Our funding sources chiefly
are dues, contributions, sales and confer-
ences. Planned giving, grants, gifts, and
in-kind donations were among new
2 C&SLpossibilities mentioned.
Structure: Discussion centered around
CSLA's internal structure and the need
for a review of the constitution and by-
laws. Chapters, dues and membership
structures were also examined.
Task Forces will be named to develop
future plans in the areas outlined. During
the strategic planning session and the
board meeting, assignments were made for
task force chairs: Membership-J.
Theodore (Jim) Anderson, Visibility-to
be handled by a CSLA chapter, Funds-
Rod McClendon, and Structure-
Maryann Barth and Marjorie Smink.
Each task force will send a preliminary
report to the president by April 30 and
report again at the July 27 Board meeting,
where action will be taken on their
recommendations. A task force may be in
existence for six months or longer.
The four task forces will work within
a framework of the core values of CSLA
and CSLA's mission, which the board
defined. They will develop a list of
objectives/goals as well as create plans to
implement them for a three-year period.
Once the details are approved by the
board, the task force will be finished with
its assignment. But each group needs your
help and input. Please contact me if you
are interested in serving on a task force
and I will pass your name on to the
appropriate chair. This is your opportunity
to let us know your thoughts and to be
involved in a relatively short assignment that
you can do from home. What could be
better for you, your congregational library
or for CSLA?
During the strategic planning session
and our board meeting, it became very
clear that one of the primary values that
CSLA promotes is service to all our
members over and above any other
considerations. This is what makes us
strong and will make us stronger in the
years ahead. Picture for yourself what
CSLA will look like in the next three, six,
nine years or more. Join us in this exciting
venture-you'll be glad you did!
Blessings to you all.
