NEWS OF THE ASSOCIATION
Congratulations to the librarians of the following two libraries who have earned Cer-
tificates of Commendation from CSLA's Self-Assessment Program. The Level 3 - Ad-
vanced Certificate - was awarded to both: on October 1st to the Oak Hill Presbyterian
Church, Akron, Ohio, where Zelma Myers serves as librarian; and on October 10th to St.
Charles Borromeo School, Bloomington, Indiana where Ruth Gleason is Media Coor-
dinator. Our warmest regards to both! Twelve requests for the self-assessment materials
have been received during the last few weeks in the National office, a sign that many seek
to improve their image and ministry. We invite other librarians to take advantage of this
excellent program to evaluate their libraries by sending $5 (members) $8.50 (non-mem-
bers) with their request to: CSLA, P.O. Box 19357, Portland, OR 97219.
NOTICE TO BOOK REVIEWERS: Charles Snyder, CSLA's Book Review Editor,
has moved. His new address is: 213 Lawn Ave., Sellersville, PA 18960.
A note dated September 29, 1988 from Ginny Kavanaugh of Kalamazoo, Michigan is
worth passing on: "Basic Books..." (by Bernard Deitrick) is a great tool. With the former
(edition), we went through our card catalog and wrote in the call number of each book we
already owned that was on the list. Then we checked to see if we had others similar for
those we didn't have, and if we
needed to buy some to have a
more rounded collection.We did
that, and it gave us a feeling of
security which we didn't have
before. We will do the same with
the newest edition." What a boost
for CSLA, and author Deitrick!
CSLA is here to help, and we
thank you, Ginny, for letting us
know we did!
Members of Bushiangala Church of God, Kenya, East Africa,
Another great piece of news is stand in front of their church library which is under construc-
worthy to pass on! Pearline Sais- tion.
bury of Lansing, and a member of the MICHIGAN CAPITOL AREA CHAPTER, is taking
her library ministry to Africa! She is personally financing the postage it takes to send our
bi-monthly newsletter airmail (rather than surface mail which takes 3 - 4 months) to three
new African members of CSLA. Pearline and her husband, Regal, while on visits to that
country, recruited for CSLA Rev. Patrick Likobele, Bushiangala Church of God, and
director of eight churches; Rev. Benson Shabanji (who has a three-year-old girl named
Pearline, and a one-year-old boy named Regal); and Joseph Maleche of East Africa. The
Salisburys have photos and videos of their visits to Africa to help them remember and re-
late their many wonderful experiences. Thank you, Pearline, for reaching out in such a
beautiful way to others, near and far, and for sharing your experiences with us!
Patricia Pearl is quoted regarding both the older and the revised editions of her book,
Religious Books for Children: "The material in the revised edition is completely new and
different. There is no duplication of titles. Each book is a separate entity. The older edi-
tion contains many titles still in print and is still useful as a buying and evaluating guide.
One needs both to get a full picture of what is available." We do have a few copies left
of the older edition, priced at $2.00 plus postage, for those who wish the added informa-
tion. Send to CSLA, P.O. Box 19357, Portland, OR 97219.
I am happy to introduce a new feature in Church and Synagogue Libraries, the begin-
ning of which is found in this issue on page 5. Donna McLaughlin and Janelle Paris
