Cronin:Now as the time was drawing closer and closer and closer
to the end of the war, did you wonder what was going to
happen to you . . .
Oh, yes.
. . . when the Germans lost.
Yes.
In your own mind, were you convinced that they were going
to kill you?
No. Oh, no, no. I couldn't imagine any such atrocity,
but I guess I was naive. But here again, I think you
always think it's going to happen to the next camp or
the next guy. No, there was never that thought. We
were just thinking about when we would get home.
Well, apparently there was no hint that you were going
to be liberated from what you've told me. Just one day
you woke up and the guards were gone.
That's right. We woke up one morning and they were gone.
It was a shock, a real shock.
In other words, I imagine they wanted to get the hell
away from the Russians.
Yes.
They probably were heading west, or heading east actually.
Well, yes. They were cutting them off from the south,
and they wanted to get into American hands, I imagine.
We understood that fifty to sixty of the men were killed.
Immediately that morning word came down by word of mouth,
