feel for them, but I don't mean that I would want to
change things within the framework of the law. I'm not
critical of the government or anything like that. I'm
just saying, "Yes, it must be terrible in Vietnam." And
that's the thing that hurt us the most.
Did you live from day to day?
Yes.
Is that the only way you could do it?
Yes. You always thought tomorrow maybe it'll be better.
Did you have to be a great optimist?
I don't know.
Or did you really have to more or less be a realist?
I don't know. I hadn't thought of it in terms of . . .
I don't know. I think you'd probably have to have a
little bit of optimism in you. I guess that that would
be a good word. I think that if I weren't an optimist,
I probably wouldn't have taken the life of a salesman
where you live by your wits. You have to be optimistic
about what you can do tomorrow. But I guess on the other
hand everybody is that way. I didn't find too much
pessimism in there. A lot of bitching, griping, hell-
raising, people hating it.
I would assume that prison camp brought out the very best
and the very worst in individuals.
