VENUS LANDING
LIVE:HIX
The Soviet News Agency "Tass" this afternoon confirmed earlier reports by British scientists that Russia's un-manned "Venus 8" spacecraft has made a soft landing on the Planet Venus. Tass said a descent capsule separated from the carrier rocket, and parachuted for 109 minutes thru clouds which perpetually in shield Venus from view. The Soviets said "Venus 8" transmitted information back to earth for 50-minutes before going silent. LItts believed the capsule was then burned up OR crushed by the intense heat and pressure on the planet's 4 surface. The U.S. has sent a number of space probes PAST Venus to photograph the planet, but has never tried to land a craft on the surface.
