Parkland attorneys are really playing dirty -- they are actively
recruiting people who whould be our friends, who should be supportive of
our already successful efforts to secure quality health care at Parkland
(AZT, pentamidine mist), to file affidavits to discredit DGA as a qualified
plaintiff in this case.
Some examples of affidavits attached in support of Parkland's
homophobic document filed with Judge Sanders:
"In my opinion, the DGA will not fairly and adequately represent the
PWA's and HIV positive indigent persons of Dallas County. The DGA is
primarily a political organization...It is my opinion that Waybourn uses
the AIDS issue to further the political ambitions of the DGA. It has been
my experience in dealing with Waybourn and the DGA that the group is
divisive toward, and often has conflicts with, the AIDS service groups in
Dallas County."
Buck Buckingham
Project Manager
AIDS Arms Network
In my opinion, the DGA will not fairly and adequately represent the
interest of the Dallas County indigent mothers and children with AIDS or
who are HIV positive. Some of the women we serve contracted AIDS from
their husbands who, unknown to the women, were bisexual. As a result,
these women have an extreme fear and distrust of homosexuals. The DGA,
being an organization comprised solely of homosexuals, cannot fairly and
adequately represent their interest."
Stefanie Held
Co-founder
Open Arms, Inc.
(respite care program for women and
children affected by the AIDS crisis)
"To my knowledge, no one organization or agency has been appointed to
represent PW1s as a whole in Dallas County. The PVA clients, as a whole,
were not consulted with the regard to the class action suit brought by the
Dallas Gay Alliance against Parkland Hospital and do not unilaterally
support the law suit."
Alan H. Levi
Chairman of the Board of Directors
Oaklawn Counseling Center
The attorneys also use Craig Holcomb's remarks from the City Council
meeting of September 14, 1988:
"Over the years I have tried to work with the Dallas Gay Alliance but
it has been very clear over the years that if you disagree with them you
are a 'homophobe'."
Holcomb, having "tried...over the years" to work with this group tells
us if you don't capitulate to their demands, they accuse you of having an
irrational fear of homosexuals. Homosexuality is their theme and obsession
- everything is viewed, and used, only as it relates to their "sexual
orientation."
