"I will try to draw you into
my story, into my thesis, by
telling you about myself."
Angelou proceeded to re-
count childhood memories,
such as her Uncle Willie's
impact on others' willing-
ness to learn. She contrast-
ed obstacles such as the
rape she experienced as an
8-year-old with the security
she found in the poetry she
read as a child. She often
broke into song and recited
literature that had an im-
pact on her when she was
young, including Shake-
speare's sonnets.
Cassandra Berry, associate
vice president for equity anddiversity, named Angelou an
honorary member of the NT
Ally Program. Angelou was
then given a vase from Tiffany
& Co, among other gifts.
"The incredible journey of
your life and your words in-
spire us, they delight us, they
bring tears of sadness and also
tears of joy," Berry said to An-
gelou as they stood onstage.
NT presented Angelou
with an honorary doctorate of
humane letters degree.
"Dr. Maya Angelou, the
University of North Texas
recognizes your remarkable
commitment to humanity and
the example you've set for ev-
ery citizen," Provost Howard
Johnson said.
Angelou struck a pose with
the ceremonial doctorate hood
draped over her shoulder and
laughed."Her delight about being at
the university gave us, indeed,
a sense of pride," Berry said.
Among instructors, lectur-
ers, students and parents, An-
gelou specifically encouraged
NT president Norval Pohl to
impact others to his full po-
tential.
"The story about her Uncle
Willie - I think that touched
all of us. One person made a
difference, so we can make a
difference," Pohl said.
Angelou refused to talk
with press or sign books due
to her strict schedule, but both
Pohl and Berry described
Angelou as being "gracious"
during their time face-to-face
with her.
"I just introduced myself
and she immediately knew
it, and called each of us by
name," Pohl said.ews
