Black Music and the Civil Rights Movement Concert Nears
For the fourth year in a row Dallas' Junior Black Academy
of Arts and Letters Inc., will present "Black Music and the
Civil Rights Movement." The 90-minute musical begins at 6 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Music Hall in Fair Park.
JBA Founder and President Curtis King conceived and de-
veloped the idea for the musical salute to the late Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. The mostly gospel selections performed
are indicative of the Civil Rights Movement, he added.
Tony and Grammy award winner Jennifer Holliday will head-
line the tribute, accompanied by a 300-voice chorus comprised
of local church school and community choirs.
Ms. Holliday, a native Texan, first burst onto the scene
as the lead character in the hit Broadway musical "Dreamgirls.' '
Since then she has recorded several pop and rhythm and blues
albums, and most recently co-hosted "Everybody Say Yeah!,"
a televised celebration of American spiritual music.
To give the King program even more depth, actress Tommie
Stewart will recite the poems "Midway," by Naomi Madgett and-
"For My People," by Margaret Walker Alexander. Ms. Stewart
has appeared in numerous live and filmed productions. Her film
credits include "The Minstrel Man," "I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings," "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry," and "Don't Look Back,"
the life of Satchel Paige.
The Mississippi resident is a theater professor at Jackson
State University who currently is working on a PhD. degree at
Florida State University, Tallahassee. Last April Ms. Stewart
starred in a world premiere production at FSU titled "Too Much
Chain To Swim With."
