Young-Elder
Women's Health Program
lerstor:
SFhe Women's Health Project (WHP),
through small groups and a written survey,
focused on learning about the health risks and
needs of lesbians and gay women. The WHP
was formed to create education and outreach
materials specifically designed for women with
women partners and letting women know how
to stay healthy.
" The renaming of the Women's Health
Program was announced at the 1994 Lesbian
Health Fair.
r The official reception in honor of Louise
Young and Deb Elder was in January 1995 at
the Nelson-Tlebedo Community Clinic for the
renaming of the Women's Health Program to
the Young-Elder Women's Health Program.
Biographies:
Louise Young - A former instructor of
geography and currently a software engineer for
I exas Instruments, Louise Young was the first
woman President of the Dallas Gay Alliance
(now l)(iLA) in 1978-1979 In 1993, she was
Co-Chair for the Lesbian/Gay Political Coalition
of Dallas. She and her partner since 1972,
Vivienne Armstrong, were invited by President
Clinton and rode on the "Family of America'
float, representing the Gay/Lesbian Family.
Active in a number of organizations in the gay
and lesbian community since 1971, Louise
Young has received a number of awards over the
,ears including the Kuchling llumanitarian
Award in 1991, the Extra Mile Award in 1990,
and the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade
Committee Service Award in 1988.
Deb Elder - In the early 1980's, I)eb Elder
w as the sole-proprietor of a custom jewelry
business in the back of Crossroads Market when
it was owned bh Bill Nelson and Terry Tebedo,
(namesakes of the Nelson-lebedo CommunityBiographies (continued):
Clinic), along with William Way bourn, and Craig
Spaulding. She felt magnetized by the activist
energy force generated by Nelson, Tebedo,
Waybourn, and Spaulding. Her volunteer
experience is both extensive and impressive. She
served as President of the Dallas (iay & Lesbian
Alliance along with serving on the board for
AR ETE (a non-profit organization for professional
gays and lesbians) and on the Advisory Board for
Razzle Dazzle Dallas. In November 1994, she
served on the Host Committee for the NG'I'LF
Conference. Besides receiving several awards for
service in the community, Deb Elder is also the
creator of the Lesbian Information Line (214/521-
5342, Ext. 298).
Both of these women are mentors of the gay and
lesbian community and an inspiration to all
activists. They serve as 'shining stars' through the
fog that so many have been through when
deciding to leave the Jalse security of the closet
into the eyes of public scrutiny to become
community activists for the gay and lesbian
communit'. No two people know better than
Louise Young & Deb Elder that this takes stamina,
courage, and sometimes just plain old guts!Mission Statement 9
