"SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE THE BLUES" STARRING DELLA REESE
APRIL 20, 1994 CONTACT: Marilyn Clark
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 214-426-1683
The Junior Black Academy of Arts and Letters will present "Some of My Best Friends Are the
Blues" starring Della Reese, May 27-29, 1994, 8:00 PM and a 3:00 PM matinee on Sunday, May 29th, in
the JBAAL, Naomi Bruton Main Theater, 650 South Griffin Street, Dallas, Texas. Tickets are $19.50,
$21.50 and $23.50 and may be purchased at the JBAAL Box Office 214-658-7147 or Rainbow TicketMaster.
"Some of My Best Friends Are the Blues", written by Franklin Lett, follows an intimate journey
into the hearts of women. And no one can make that journey more heart-touching or enjoyable for you
as Della Reese can. Dellas understands the women who sang the blues and who had the blues...the
pain of a love lost, the jealousy of a love contested,...the need for a man and the sassiness of 'making his
mouth water'. The themes vary, but they're still called the blues.
"There is a whole lifetime of feelings to be found in the blues. You will find yourself laughing and
crying as you hear songs familiar, song unfamiliar. Della will make you moan with rememberances, and
shout with agreement, because the blues, of all the music we have, is truly the peoples music. It touches
the nerves that other music tries to touch," states Curtis King, President and Founder
"Some of My Best Friends Are the Blues", the show's theme, may seem a bit of a downer. It isn't.
As Della says, "I've got sad blues, sexy blues and low-down dirty funky blues." She opens this one and half
hour show by sauntering in from the back of the stage singing "Come Rain or Come Shine," and follows
that with "Some of My Best Friends Are the Blues", "Right Key, But The Wrong Keyhole," "See See Rider,"
"If Loving You Is Wrong.." and many other standard and blues favorites.
