The North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts invites the University of North Texas Foundation, Inc.
to consider making a one year grant of $16,(X) to assist in meeting the match in year 1 (1990). This represents 32% of
the required funds. Academic areas at the University of North Texas have made a strong commitment to assist in meet-
ing the first year match, the Texas Commission on the Arts has made a small grant, and contacts with other foundations,
trusts, and individuals are being pursued to round out the first year requirements. Discussions'with foundations and
charitable trusts have been extremely encouraging for matching funds in future years. A proposal for $159,0()0 has
been submitted to the Amon G. Carter Foundation to assist in meeting the match during the second, third and fourth
years of the project. Proposals have also been submitted to the Crystelle Waggoner Charitable Trust, several undif-
ferentiated trusts administered by the TEAMBANK in Fort Worth, and the William E. Scott Foundation.
Although we are requesting an outright grant so that we will not have to scale back the effectiveness of the In-
stitute in its first year of operation, I recognize that a special relationship exists between the academic areas of the
University and the Foundation. Consequently, if it is more consistent with the thinking of the directors, we are prepared
to accept your participation in the project through a contingency grant, i.e., the $16,000 or some portion thereof will be
used only if needed to satisfy the minimal requirements of the first year. match so as not to lose the Getty funds al-
together. If we have raised no other funds from outside sources by May 1, 1990, we would need all of the $16,0(X) to
proceed, albeit on a considerably reduced basis. If we are successful in raising additional outside funds, we could, if
we had to, lower the UNT Foundation's commitment by any outside gifts received by May 1. I would be happy to dis-
cuss this or any other participation possibility with you.
The future of the North Texas region is in the elementary and secondary schools of this region. Our education of
tomorrow's leaders must be one of the best in the nation and the visual arts are a critical component of a comprehen-
sive and well-balanced curriculum. ENHANCED MENTAL SKILLS FOR FUTURE BUSINESS/COMMUNITY
LEADERS can be engendered through sequenced, integrated and discipline-based arts education. A greater ability to
innovate and to deal constructively with ambiguity are prime leadership skills required in our modern society accord-
ing to Peters and Waterman (In Search of Excellence, 1982). The North Texas Institute will promote change in the
teaching of the visual arts to thousands of children in this region by emphasizing that a large amount of human learn-
ing is based upon visual images and that a rigorous study of the arts develops creative and higher-level thinking skills.
I am enclosing a total budget for the project. If you have questions or need additional information, please do not
hesitate to contact me. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely yours,
D. Jac Davis
Vice Provost and Co-Director
