WHY MAKE A "MARTYR" *
* OF 3IM?*
* *
* *
* (By Jack Ainslie)
Proponents of the Ferguson
* anti-amnesty bill now under *
= consideration at Austin doubt- *
* less believe that its enactment *
* would render the State a useful *
service. Quite the reverse is s
* likely to be the result of their s
* efforts, should the bill finally *
* pass. *
* More than any other man in
the recent political history of *
the State, Jim Ferguson possess- *
es the ability to capitalize to his *
own advantage the political ma-
* neuvers of his opponents. And *
* nothing suits him better than *
* to pose as the champion of the ,
common people being led to the *
stake by his political enemies. *
* Two years ago he rode graceful-
s ly into a proxy governorship *
" largely by playing the role of a *
* betrayed political martyr seek- *
* ing vindication. *
Entirely apart from the legal *
* and constitutional merits of the *
* amnesty bill its repeal would *
serve to restore Jim Ferguson to *
his coveted place in Texas pol- *
* itics as the symbol of injured in- *
nocence. It is decidedly poor *
* strategy to place in the hands *
of an opponent the kind of wea- *
* pon he is most adept at using. *
* Hence, those among the legisla- *
* tors who sincerely desire to rid *
* Texas politics of influence of *
* Jim Ferguson should strive to *
defeat the anti amnesty bill. *
* Why place a new crown of *
* thorns on Jim's crafty head? *
* (Ed. Note: The reader may t
* or may not agree with "Jack's *
idea. Personally, we think the *
s anti amnesty bill should be *
* passed, if for no other reason *
* than to put Texas' stamp of dis- *
* approval on Fergusonism. Fur- *
* there, we believe the people of *
* Texas have a large stomachful *
* of Jim, and will never, never
fall for the sympathy, vindica- *
* tion, and allied rot.) *
