Notes

The painting that appears on the backside of this item is referencing the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup. The Vanderbilt Cup, founded and funded in 1904 by William Vanderbilt II, was the first major trophy in American auto racing. The large cash prize put forth by the Vanderbilt family drew international attention and was intended to bring American manufacturers into the new age of motor vehicle technology through racing, and compete with major European races such as Le Mans and automobile manufacturers The Vanderbilt Cup saw the building of America's first motor speedway as a way to improve safety, which opened partially in the 1908 race seen in this item. In 1908, George Robertson became the first American to win an international race in an American vehicle. The vehicle in question was the American Locomobile, which was the company's first gas-powered car and was designed by Andrew L. Riker. The Vanderbilt Cup is tied to the famous names of Louis Chevrolet, Vincenzo Lancia, and Ralph DePalma.
