Victor Awards go to top managers

Today's Distinguished Salesman Award, or Victor
Award, originated in 1923 when the Manufacturers and
Wholesalers Association (MWA) of Fort Worth, Texas,
sponsored the "Annual Salesmen's Frolic." The "Frolic"
was an all-day affair highlighted by a banquet. The meeting
was held late in the year to coincide with company sales
meetings, which allowed salesmen who traveled large
territories via then-limited transportation, to gather back
in town. The purpose of the "Frolic" was to allow salesmen
to exchange ideas- and to promote Fort Worth as a trade
center.
Dave L. Tandy, founder of Tandy Leather Co., served
as general chairman of the banquet in 1923 and in 1924.
Tandy Leather Co. was the forerunner of Tandy Corpora-
tion, founded by the late Charles D. Tandy.
In 1925, an awards ceremony was added to the banquet.
The salesman who displayed exceptional sales talent
during the year was crowned "King of Salesmen."
The MWA and the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce
merged in 1927, but retained some separate activities. That
same year Dave Tandy and fellow businessman, Carl
Wollner, founded the Sales Managers Club. The Sales
Managers Club and the Chamber of Commerce co-spon-
sored the "Frolic," re-naming it the "Annual Salesman's
Banquet," in 1928. On December 28, 1929, the first Distin-
guished Service Award, forerunner of the Distinguished
Salesman Award, was presented. The first awards were
diamond-studded lapel pins.
In 1931, Dave Tandy, Wollner and several other area
businessmen decided to make their club a national one.
Their goal was realized in 1936 when the Sales and Market-
ing Executives International (SMEI) was begun.
Today, SMEI chapters around the world gather annually
to recognize top sales people. Selection of the winners is

2based on performance in sales gains, management and
profit margins during the first half of the fiscal year.
Today's winners receive a trophy called the "Victor."
The present day award was created in 1950, and it features
a golden figure atop a wood and gold pedestal. The mold
belongs exclusively to SMEI.
At this year's banquet, four Radio Shack employees
received the Victor Award when members of Texas-based
companies gathered for the annual meeting in Fort Worth,
sponsored by the Sales and Marketing Executives and the
Chamber of Commerce. Honored as our Company's out-
standing sales leaders were: Don Jones, manager, Central
Franchise Region; Mike Murray, manager, Miami Region;
Fred Solis, manager, Store 9904-El Paso, Texas; and Bob
Wade, manager, District 0841, Atlanta Region.
Don Jones
Don Jones began his Radio Shack career in 1972 after
spending 17 years in the insurance business. Jones started as
a franchise-trainee in what was then Fort Worth Franchise
Region, which later became the Central Franchise Region.
Eventually he became assistant regional manager. In
December 1975, he was named manager of the Fort Worth
Franchise Region. In January 1977, the Central Franchise
Region, consisting of 715 stores in a 14-state area, was
created and Jones stepped in as regional manager.
A previous winner of the Victor Award in Arizona in
1962 for insurance sales, Jones has brought his sales
expertise to his franchise region. Through his dedication,
sales effort and organizing talent, he has made his region a
real winner with sales in eight figures.
Jones also finds time to devote to various community
activities such as doing volunteer work as an Emergency
Medical Technician. He has been a state officer in the Junior
Chamber of Commerce, an officer and charter member of
the Burleson, Texas, Lions Club, a Mason and a Shriner.
A native of Litchfield, Ill., Jones attended the University
