Radio Shack, in conjunction with the Sales and Mar-
keting Executives of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth
Chamber of Commerce, were recently very pleased to
present seven top managers with the Distinguished
Salesman's Award, or Victor Trophy.
The present-day Victor Award began in 1923 from an
idea of the late Dave Tandy, founder of Tandy Leather
Company and father of the late Charles D. Tandy, in
which salesmen could gather in one place to ex-
change ideas, experiences and sales techniques and
at the same time promote Fort Worth as a trade center.
The Manufacturers and Wholesalers Association of
Fort Worth kicked off the idea with an all-day affair
followed by a banquet. The event was held late in the
year to coincide with company sales meetings. This
allowed men traveling considerable distances by
then-limited transportation to gather back in town.
In 1925, an awards banquet was added at which the
salesman who displayed exceptional sales talent dur-
ing the year was crowned "King of Salesmen."
The MWA and Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce
merged in 1927. That same year Dave Tandy and
fellow businessman, Carl Wollner, founded the Sales
Managers Club.
The club and Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored
the annual event, renaming it the "Annual Salesman's
Banquet." In 1929, the first Distinguished Salesman
Award was presented.
In 1931, Dave Tandy, Wollner and several other
businessmen decided to make their club a national
one. Their plan was accomplished in 1936 when the
Sales and Marketing Executives International (SMEI)
came into being.
Today, SMEI chapters around the world gather an-
nually to give public recognition to top salesmen. Se-
ection of the winners is left up to individual
companies. Radio Shack's selection is based on per-
formance in sales gains, management and profit mar-
gins during the first half of the fiscal year.
Each winner receives a Victor Trophy. Created in
21950, it features a golden figure atop a golden pedes-
tal. The molds belong exclusively to SMEI.
This year's banquet, held at the Hyatt-Regency Ho-
tel in Fort Worth, found seven Radio Shack managers
receiving the Victor Award. Honored as the Compa-
ny's outstanding salesmen were: Presley Talley, re-
gional manager, Albany; Angelo Scalia, regional
manager, Boston Franchise Region; Bob Buwala, re-
gional computer marketing manager, Albany; Ed Hut-
chison, manager, District 0894, Albany Region; Paul
Marshall, manager, Store 9530-Punta Gorda, Fla.; Mi-
chael Flink, manager, RSCC 7463-Charleston, S.C.;
and Robert Rutherford, department manager, 18-
4913-Fairmont, W. Va.
