Last-minute heroics save Christmas season
What began as a possible disas-
ter for the New York Region the
week before Christmas turned
out to be an all-night affair of
unloading trucks and moving
merchandise.
"The week before Christmas,
we received a call from the Boston
warehouse informing us that the
New York Region would not be re-
ceiving any shipments," said Pete
Giannone, District 0362 manager.
According to Giannone the rea-
son for the problem was that driv-
ers for the common carriers, which
the Boston warehouse depended
on to get merchandise to the
stores, would not be working be-
cause of the holidays.
Plans were immediately coordi-
nated between Dick O'Brien, re-gional manager, and Gordon Irwin,
Boston warehouse manager, to get
drivers and tractor-trailer rigs
loaded with merchandise and sent
to the New York Region.
Five tractor-trailers were com-
pletely loaded with merchandise
for more than 200 stores and com-
puter centers and driven, by driv-
ers from Tandy Transportation, to
Long Island and Stamford, Conn.
The first three trucks arrived
around 11 p.m. and were met by
approximately 80 managers,
manager-trainees, salesmakers
and part-timers with 30 rented
trucks, vans and personal pickup
trucks.
"Once merchandise arrived, we
began unloading it from the
tractor-trailers and staging it forthe appropriate stores," Giannone
said.
The last two trucks arrived
around 2 a.m. and again merchan-
dise was unloaded onto the park-
ing lot and broken down according
to location. Deliveries to stores
didn't begin until around 4 a.m.
"We didn't finish placing the
merchandise into stores until
about 8 a.m., giving personnel
enough time to go home, shower
and change," Giannone added.
Giannone says surprisingly
enough there was a lot of enthusi-
asm. "We were able to overcome
what seemed to be a major prob-
lem. Everyone jumped in and did
what they knew had to be done. I
think everyone deserves a big
thanks."Brian Desrosier (foreground), department manager at 18-1202 in
