Last month I promised to "get perso-
nal" and share some thoughts on rela-
tionships. I recently read The Male
Couple, an informative study of gay
male relationships and how they develop.
Even we single (and available) people
can benefit from the book:
It is very important that institu-
tions, particularly our bonding and
coupling, be fully supported within
the gay community and that we ensure
support at some point from the total
community. Hopefully, understanding
how our relationships develop through
various stages will lead to increased
understanding of the problems faced at
each stage. The authors, Andrew P.
McWhirter and Andrew M. Mattison, do
not claim to have presented the final
and definitive study on gay male coup-
ling, but certainly they have provided
valuable and helpful information to
guide us.
A year ago I experienced the pain of
the most important relationship of my
life "not working" any longer. A year
and this insightful book helped me sort
through the debris left by that painful
experience. Life is a complicated pro-
cess, and our bonding and coupling is
no exception. I hope the information
in this book and in future similar stu-
dies will make one complicated process
easier to understand. And if it's eas-
ier to understand, an important--possi-
bly the most important--institutionwithin the gay community will be stronger.
I don't want our commitment to civil
rights, our commitment to education, our
commitment to psychosocial services, or
our commitment to political activity to
ever interfere with our commitment to
support and strengthen our bonding--our
loving each other. Personally, I'm
changing the word "our" to "my" in that
last sentence. Now perhaps my priori-
ties will be in the proper order to make
things "work" again in a neglected part
of my life.
Give that special person a big hug and
renew your commitment to the relation-
ship. It's a vitally important compo-
nent in your life--and our community.
Thanks M' Only the good memories are
important today.by Alan Ross
The Dallas gay community, and the DGA
in particular, was treated to "An Even-
ing With Tom" on May 7th. The star, Tom
Davis, is the manager of The Round-Up
Saloon and had worked many months per-
fecting this evening of entertainment
at The Round-Up which benefitted the
Alliance. Country-western singer Dena

Meet You On
Cloud 9
by Alan Ross
This is an early announcement for a
special DGA NIGHT showing of "Cloud 9"
at the Dallas Theater Center on Sunday,
July 22nd. The Alliance will sponsor
the entire evening, with the proceeds
from the sale of the 150 seats of the
"In The Basement" series benefitting
the DGA.
Playwright Caryl Churchill's award-
winning, wickedly funny comedy was writ-
ten following a series of workshops
which she says were "set up to explore
a wide range of sexual politics and ex-
periences; preferences, too."
The resulting play has a comically
chaotic plot, enriched by settings of
time and place which are delightfully
disorienting. The play also is embel-
lished by a bewildering scramble of
actors' roles, which allows the company
of seven to appear as fifteen different
characters, without regard to sex. The
casting technique results in some inter-
esting contrasts: the mother in the
First Act returns as her own son's male
lover in the Second; the governess reap-
pears as her former mistress; and lusty
pairings take place constantly regard-
less of gender.
Plan now to join us at a "Gay Night"
at the Dallas Theater Center for this
comedy that begins in Africa in the ap-
parently quite gay 1880s and ends 100
years later in the largely liberal life
of United Queendom where the characters
have aged only 25 years. Tickets will
be available at Crossroads Market on
June 15th. However, early reservations
may be made with the enclosed reply form
Prices for tickets will be the regular
price of $12, which will include wine or
champagne at a reception following the
performance.by Mike Stewart, President of
