the money." When the time came around, they welched on the
deal. As a result, my father lost his farm, and we had to
move out. That was about the way it was. Of course, this
ol' doctor was sort of an ol' Scrooge-like guy, a money grabber,
and he would buy up notes and discount them. You know the
type. In other words, if a man had a note for, let's say,
$1,000, he'd buy it for $700.
He'd profit from hard times.
That's right. He knew how to work it, you know, to where he
could make it. Every town has got one, you know. In fact,
he looked like an ol' Scrooge himself, you know. Of course,
he lived forever. I don't know whether he's dead yet or not.
Those kind of people don't never die, you know. Anyway, he
scratched around for every cent he could lay his hands on.
He foreclosed on everybody. Cold-blooded, you know. He just
didn't have no compassion for anybody.
How did the Depression affect your family's standard living?
Its lifestyle?
Oh, gosh. Well, I guess we had a few luxuries. My mother
had a washing machine, and we had what they called a gramophone,
I guess--a Victrola, as a better word for it. I guess we went
from what you might say an affluent family to a pauper family--
to nothing, you know. Of course, back in those days you could
hire a full-grown man from sunup to sundown for six bits a day;
and then you could hire his boy and work him just as hard forMarcello:
