Evans:As I remember, we'd build traps for...when I was a kid, we'd
build traps for quail, and we'd twist rabbits out of holes
and kill squirrels with a slingshot and that sort of thing.
Do you remember what they called rabbits back in those Depression
years?
Oh, yes. They called them "Hoover hogs." Yes, they called
them "Hoover hogs." I've eaten many of them. We'd take the
jackrabbits and make chili out of them, and then you'd take
the cottontails....now the jackrabbit is a hare, and they're
not really a rabbit. But the cottontail is a true rabbit,
and you'd fry them just like chicken. In fact, they're not
bad eating. Even right today, I wouldn't mind having one.
But a jackrabbit, you made chili out of him. Of course, we
fished.
As far as food was concerned, we had our own milk and
butter and eggs. Of course, we'd kill a hog every fall, or
maybe two hogs. Then our uncle lived close to us, and he
had a little more money than we did, and he'd go deer hunting
every year. He'd kill two or three deer and bring them in.
We'd use them up as far as food was concerned.
How about your clothing? Was it affected in any way as a
result of the Depression?
Well, our mother always sewed for the girls. Now my brothers
were all older than I was, and I guess my youngest brother
was about...oh, I guess he was about eighteen. He was ten
