War I to feed the hungry of Europe, and then when it came
time to feed his own people, he didn't do anything to try to
alleviate their suffering. We always contributed it to the
fact that he had somebody that told him what to do. I'm not
saying Mr. Hoover wasn't a smart man. He was probably a
good mining engineer, but he didn't know anything about human
nature. We felt that he could have done more than what he
did do for the people.
Of course, Franklin Roosevelt won that election in 1932,
and things seemed to get better. I don't know whether they
did or not.
What do you remember about Roosevelt? That's a broad question,
obviously, but what are your childhood memories of Roosevelt?
Well, my memories of Roosevelt...I can still see his ol'
lantern jaw with that big, long cigarette holder in his mouth,
you know, with a big grin on his face. He seemed to exude
confidence in people; I mean, you'd just look at him, and you'd
just think that things were going to be better. Of course,
like a man says, it couldn't get any worse. Like a man said,
you can't fall out of bed if you're sleeping on the floor.
And we was all sleeping on the floor, so we couldn't fall
out of bed. We could only improve.

Oh, I remember reading about them, but we didn't even have
