Evans:schoolteacher would tell us about them.
Well, so much for my stupid question (chuckle), but go ahead
and continue.
It's not a stupid question at all. It's just that the facts
are that the radio was really a luxury, and only the people
in the manor houses had those. You see, back in those days,
out on a country farm, to run one of those radios you had to
have about four batteries. You had to have an A battery and
a B battery and a C battery and...dry cells.. .they were all
dry cell batteries. I imagine one of those radios would
cost $30, I guess, and the batteries would cost probably $5.
But we didn't have a radio. There was no radios at all.
The only news that we got was by word-of-mouth or when
my dad would go to town or something like that. We'd find
out the news that way. We didn't have newspapers, no radio.
But the news got around. Of course, going to school, the
schoolteachers would.. .they made about $100 a month, I guess,
and that was a lot of money. That was a lot of money then.
A schoolteacher was a very respected person, and I'm talking
about as far as their affluence was concerned. If a person
had $100 a month income during those days, he was a rich man.
Describe the procedure by which you got into the National
Youth Administration--the NYA. First of all, when did you
enroll in the NYA? Do you recall the year?
I believe I signed up for the NYA in 1938 or the early part
of 1939.
