Evans:bit about your mother and father.
Well, my father was a farmer, and during the Great Depression,
he lost his farm; and he opened up a blacksmith shop and
worked as a blacksmith. My mother was a housewife. I had
three brothers and two sisters.
Where did you fit in in terms of your age relative to your
brothers and sisters?
Well, I was "the last of the Mohicans." I was the baby of
the family. I was the last one of the group. All my other
brothers were a lot older than I was, and my youngest sister
was five years older than me. There was five years between
my sister and myself, which makes me the baby. I was the
last of the bunch.
So there was a total of six children in the family?
Yes,, six children. My father was a blacksmith after he lost
his...he lost his farm during the Great Depression. It was
foreclosed on, and we lived in the rural communities there.
He farmed part-time and blacksmithed part-time.
Talk a little bit about the family farm. How large was it,
and what sort of crops did it grow?
Well, the farm that my father lost during the Depression was
160 acres, and he raised cotton, maize, wheat, oats, and
barley.
Cotton, I assume, was the principal money crop--the cash crop.
Yes, the cash crop. That and wheat.
