Evans:Yes, and my father had worked a deal with one of his friends,
and he leased that place to him for a year, and he stayed on,
I believe, one year longer than what he could have because
the lease was still valid, and they couldn't move us off at
that particular time. I think the foreclosure took place in
1931, and we didn't move out of there until January of 1933.
What do you recall about the foreclosure?
Well, as I remember, they came out and served my father some
papers, and I think that the man that owned the mortgage on
the place was a retired doctor--I believe. I don't remember
whether he was retired or whether he had quit practicing and
started loan sharking. But he used to come out there two or
three times a week harassing my father for whatever it was--
payment or whatever.
My dad had two loans on the place. He had a first lien
with the farm...I think I'm thinking of the Farm Home Loan
Administration, and then he had made some certain second
lien notes, or second liens, in order to consummate the deal
when he made the trade. This retired doctor, or this old
doctor, had bought up those notes and foreclosed on the
second lien notes, and he bought up the first lien notes some
way. I don't know how it worked, but I don't think that my
father owed over $1,500 or $2,000 on that 160 acres of land.
It had a windmill and a good nice stream of water through
it--good, fine land. Of course, it had a little Johnson grass
on it, but generally speaking, it was good,, fine humous soil
