and black land. It had a good barn on it and a garage and
a six-room house. It had screens on it, and, of course,
screens back in those days were kind of hard to come by.
We had running water from the windmill.
How about electricity? You didn't have electricity, did you?
Oh, no, there was no electricity back in those days at all.
That didn't come along until...
The Rural Electrification Administration.
That's correct. Now we're talking about pre-Roosevelt times.
Oh, absolutely.
I remember moving away from the place. I remember the sheriff
coming out and serving the papers on my dad. I remember this
ol' doctor used to come out there, and I guess he was dunning
my dad to get the money. Of course, Dad didn't have the
money, nor did he know where he was going to get it. A little
over $900 was the final judgment.
I've often wondered what people were going to do with those
farms and so on once they did foreclose on them. There wasn't
anyone else around to buy them, was there?
Well, it was my understanding.. .of course, under the laws of
the State of Texas, you can't buy back your...see, when you
foreclose, you have to sell at auction, you know, and you
can't buy it back. Well, this ol' doctor, I understand,
bought it back two or three times. He foreclosed on it several
