You know, of course, the ol' robber barons back in those
days could pretty well do as they wanted to. You know, those
that had a little money, of course, made a lot of money during
those bad times. They could buy up that good land and keep
it for themselves, and it is my understanding that after he
foreclosed on that, he sold it to another group of people who
took it and made a down payment on it, and he foreclosed on
them, until finally...I don't know. He was kind of an old
Scrooge kind of fellow, you know. Of course, I understand
that Mr. Meese up in Washington said Mr. Scrooge wasn't such
a bad man. Of course, maybe he and I are not reading about
the same guy (chuckle).
Now obviously your father was unable to make the payments,
and that's why the foreclosure occurred.
That's right.
I assume this is because of the falling prices for cotton.
That's correct. That's right. My father made a good crop
every year, but cotton was about 5c a pound, wheat was 20
a bushel, and oats was 5' and 10 a bushel. In fact, it
would cost you more to gather it than it would to sell it.
There was just an overall economic collapse.
Do you recall the auctioning off of the farm equipment and
so forth?
No. They didn't have an auction. They just foreclosed on
the land. We kept our livestock; they weren't mortgaged.Marcello:
