We kept our livestock, which is horses, mules, cattle, and,
of course, chickens and hogs and whatever we had.
As I recall, Dad rented a place for two years. I believe
he rented a place off of somebody else, and we made a crop
for a few years after that on what you call "a third" and
"a fourth"--a fourth of the cotton and a third of the wheat.
But actually speaking, there wasn't much money to be made
there for several years, from 1931 through...well, times
didn't get better until 1935 or 1936. Along in there things
got a little bit better. Actually, they didn't get better
until 1939, when the war started in Europe.
Of course, there was a complete economic collapse. I
remember my father losing money in the bank. It went broke.
My uncle lost money in a bank that went broke. Banks were
going broke all over.
And, of course, this was before the Federal Deposit Insurance
Corporation.
That's correct. That's right. They had no way to recoup
their losses. Of course, everybody was in the same boat, so
you didn't get any help from anybody else. You didn't get
any sympathy from anybody because everybody was in the same
boat, and nobody had any money. Expept there were a few
people who had money.
