The Mentors/Critical Friends
The 35 mentors/critical friends working with the 35 partner schools are crucial to the
realization of the Challenge project's goals. These professionals have been charged by
the NAEC's leadership to facilitate communication between the directors of the six
Consortium member organizations and their respective partner schools. The
responsibilities of the mentors/critical friends include but are not limited to:
+ advancing a common understanding of the Challenge project's goals among
the partner school staffs and communities;
+ facilitating the collaborative planning processes at each partner school
necessary for the development and implementation of reform plans that
address the following needs:
- professional development
- technical assistance
- use of technology
* use of community resources
- project evaluation
* assessment of student achievement
- advancement of collaborative planning;
+ reporting to and advising the NAEC's leadership and member organizations
concerning the progress of the partner schools and the design of professional
development and technical assistance services for these schools; and
+ advising and assisting the National Evaluation Team with the implementation
of the Challenge project's National Evaluation Plan.
The Obstacle
Collaboration is the foundation upon which the Transforming Education Through the
Arts Challenge has been established. All stakeholders with the Challenge project,
whether at the national, regional or local levels, have committed to advancing the
project's goals through consensus building and collaborative processes. But these
stakeholders have quickly realized that collaborative efforts are much easier in theory
than in practice, and that changing old ways of conducting business is much more
complex than expected. This gap between committing theoretically to collaboration
and actually being able to put it into practice presents a true challenge to the National
Arts Education Consortium and its work.
