THIRTY-NINTH PROGRESS REPORT
January 1, 2005 - March 31, 2005
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The University of North Texas was awarded a contract in August, 2004 (TDH Document
No. 1756002149900-03) by the Texas Department of Health to provide administrative support
and technical assistance to eligible entities in implementing projects based on the
Seniors/Volunteers for Childhood Immunization (SVCI) model developed by UNT's Texas
Institute for Research and Education on Aging. The SVCI model demonstration utilized seniors
to perform effective outreach activities within a community aimed at preschool children before
the age of two. Under the current contract, UNT is conducting training utilizing the
Seniors/Volunteers for Childhood Immunization training videos and manual, offering technical
assistance, and evaluating outcomes for SVCI sites.
I. MAJOR ACTIVITIES DURING THIS PERIOD:
Subcontract with established SVCI programs:
The institute completed issuing subcontracts to eight established SVCI sites. (see 37th progress
report).
Administer a process to select and subcontract with at least five (5) new SVCI programs:
Communication with representatives in Laredo continued during the project period. A request for
proposal was sent to representatives to be completed and submitted by the next project period.
Provide an initial traininQ session of not less than twelve (12) hours for volunteer coordinators,
volunteer organization directors, and coalition members on implementinQ their SVCI program:
No initial training session took place on October 22"d, 2004, as all sites have trained personnel.
Provide to new sites, a minimum of four (4) full days of on-site training and technical assistance
with follow-up visits as needed:
No on-site visits to train personnel new to the SVCI program were conducted during this quarter.
The updated version of the SVCI database is web-based; Alberto Guzman and Elsie B. Wiley
visit sites to provide technical assistance. Initial on-site training includes a thorough step-by-step
introduction to the procedures related to the data entry of information from the cards, explanation
of each feature and icon represented in the database, explanation of the procedures to send data,
and a discussion of the procedures manual, which was developed by Elsie B. Wiley.
Provide, as needed, (and funds allow), an annual update traininQ session for staff persons from
established sites:
An update training session was conducted on October 22, 2004. (See attached materials) Sites in
attendance include Texas Panhandle RSVP - Amarillo, Travis County RSVP - Austin, Mitchell1
