Are there any other kinds of changes in the routine that
you could detect in that period prior to the war?
No, it had already taken place due to the fact of
overcrowding when the big fleet came in there. We
suspected something, though, when that fleet stayed
there. We talked a little bit about it; but knowing
that we couldn't do nothing about it, there wasn't much
use talking about it.
What was the scuttlebutt going around?
Well, mostly we just talked about what was going on over
in Europe, in other words, the way the war was going.
We didn't get much news on board. We didn't have a
newspaper then. After the war started, when we wasn't
able to get news from the island, well, we did have a
little newspaper printed aboard ship.
Suppose war did come between the United States and
Japan. Did you and your buddies ever discuss the
possibility that it might happen at Pearl?
No. Not in our wildest dreams did we ever think itwould come to Pearl Harbor.
I suspect this was mainly because of the distance
involved.
Yes, the distance involved. And we thought we was
