Description

Early edition of Heidi by Johanna Spyri and edited by Adeline B. Zachert and illustrated by Clara M. Burd. The cover is covered in black fabric with a color illustration in the center. The illustration is of Heidi with her grandfather outside, feeding three goats from their hands. The illustration is surrounded by symmetrical floral motifs and the title and illustrator's name in gold. On the spine is the title, and author's and publisher's names. The floral motifs also continue on the spine. Also on the spine is a strip with red and yellow stripes with "GCW" in cursive on it to mark the owner, Gustine Courson Weaver. The cover page has more floral motifs in blue and red. At the tip is a box with the title and in the center is another box with the names of the author, editor, illustrator, and publishing company in the same blue as the motifs. On the opposite page is a full color illustration of Heidi and other boy holding walking sticks, standing in a grassy clearing of a forest with some goats. In the background are tall evergreen trees and tree stumps. The illustration is captioned with "The Children Started Joyfully for the Mountain." On page 29 is a graphite drawing of Heidi sitting on a stool, drinking from a bowl. It's captioned with "Heidi Lifted the Bowl with Both Hands". Page 99 has an illustration of Heidi and a girl named Clara cuddling with cats. Clara is sitting in a chair with her back supported by several pillows and her lap laden with blankets. In one arm is a kitten. Standing next to her is Heidi with the other kitten. Opposite of Clara is a table with books and a pitcher. Next to the table is a window with the shutters and curtains opened to let in light. The illustration is captioned with "Clara with the Kittens On Her Lap". On page 137 is another pencil drawing of Heidi in a long white nightgown. Its captioned "There In Her White Nightgown Stood Heidi". Page 155 is a full color illustration of Heidi standing outside in a clearing. In one hand she is holding a basket while her other hand is hidden by her head. On either side of the path she is standing on are rocks, grass, and flowers. Further down the path are two goats grazing next to a pile of large rocks. Next to the rocks opposite of the goats is a wooden fence and some tall evergreen trees. At the end of the path is Heidi's grandfather smoking in front of his cabin. In the background are mountains jutting against the sky. The illustration is captioned "There was Grandfather Sitting as in the Old Days.
