Ten-gallon hats and cookskin caps are the uniform of the
day in Fort Vorth:l---as the 1951 Southwestern Exposition
and Fat Stock Show is opened with a parade led by Governor
Shivers, Sheriff Sully Montgonery and Billy Bob Watt, president
of the Stock Show. The parade is one long array of color---
and western costumes. The object of the Fat Stock Show, of
course, is to foster the livestock industry which, even in this
era of amazing industrial development, is a mighty factor in
the lives of the people of the Southwest. Also, the Show is
a get-together for many thousands of people each year, and
Fort Worth looks forward to it. Sunny, springlike weather, a
rarity for the Stock Show, makks the opening days, but the
expected cold wasn't long in coming.
The Stock show is recognized as one of the four major shows of
the nation, its ribbons and awards the target of the foremost
livestock raisers in America. It's come a long way since the
first show in 1896, when a small crowd looked at a few head
of cattle under some shade trees. Contrast that with this year's
