In E Paso, the military has placed a local gay bar, the Old Plantation, off limits to military
personne. The alleged reason for this restriction is pevention of sexually transmitted
disease, However, local actists in the El Paso Gay(Lesbian issues Allance (GLIA) feel
that roitary homophobia is the real reason.
Accordng to Laura McIntosh, president of GLIA, the Old Plantation Bar has a reputation for
sUpporting AIDS edcation through safer sex 'The bar always has a condoms by the door
and has contests to see who knows the most abort safer sex. Old Pianraton also has a
rtputation for donating to the Southwest AIDS Foundation-
'i the military at Fort Bilis was really concerned about the preventon of sexualy
transmitted disease, then they should have placed all of the strain ,bars in El Paso and
Juarez on restriction that don't do safer sex education stated McIntosh. 'This 'dsease
peventio' excuse is ludrous. The rel iswue is iscimination against gay and lesbian
military personne"
McIntosh also stated that a Ueutenant Colonel Prevost had c Ped her at her home to talk
with her about the exemption, I don't know how he got my unlisted numb," McIntosh
stated:l think he called lust to harass me.'
Evidently Fort Bliss has not has not gne through the proper hannes to pace Old
Plantation oil limits COrdinary the rniitry must show some proof {or pacmg a bar off
limits. This time the military has no proi. When a local reporter ask Colonel Prevost for
the report. the Coone stated that he had lost the report McIntosh stated
GLIA held a press conference in El Paso on March 30. w'ich was attended by all of the
local teevsion stations and members of the Juarez press
