In the Dallas courtroom of criminal district judg
Wilson, ex .onvict Gene William Hackett goes on
trial for the May 20th armed robbery of a Dallas
liquor store. Last month, Hackett drew a 99 year
prison sentence when a jury found him guilty of

During Jury selection this morning,
Hackett whipped out a toy pistol and tried to escape.
The excitement sent court reporter Bill Sutton ducking
under a desk, as Hackett ran for the door.Deputy Sheriff John Massey and bailiff Paul Norris
stopped the attempted escape. Massey grabbed the
pistol, and sent Hackett reeling to the floor with
a hard right hand in the abdomen. Hackett made the
pistol of cork and tin cups, held together with soap.
He blackened the pistol with smoke, to give it a
blue-*steel appearance.- - - -
