JUDGMENTAL ATTITUDE HARMFUL
...........................................-
W illiam Waybourn's recent letter to your
publication [Dallas Voice, April 22,
1988, No. IV/52, p. 8-91 to "clarify" the facts
about the upcoming Dallas Cares AIDS bene-
fit did nothing to dispute the fact that non-gay
people initiated this event. The truth is that
Fran McNulty, a leading supporter of the arts
in Dallas, took the lead in getting this all
together. I still say, Bravo McNulty and all the
other non-gay people who had anything to do
with this! There is nothing wrong with giving
credit where credit is due.
Second, William's letter seems to imply that
if he or the DGA is not aware of all behind-
the-scenes efforts to help and support the
cause against AIDS, then either (1) it's not
really happening, or (2) it shouldn't be
happening. Both are ungracious and cruel
responses. I suspect that William Waybourn is
not halfway aware of what anonymous efforts
have gone on by caring lesbian and gay
leaders in combatting this disease. Further-
more, is William purporting to judge what is
"enough" effort against AIDS and what is the
"right" effort? God help us not to be judg-
mental.
In regard to getting the "facts" out to the,
community, many in leadership roles in our
community know that on two recent occa-
sions the DGA failed to demonstrate its
leadership qualities in organizing against
AIDS in Dallas. One such occasion was in
February at Impact '88. At that time the
Lesbian/Gay Political Coalition of Dallas
invited all the representatives of lesbian and
gay organizations to come together to dis-
cover ways to unify our community within the
political arena to confront the AIDS crisis.
Over 150 lesbian and gay leaders attended.
Fifty organizations were represented. The
leadership of DGA voted not to attend. Why?
Did Waybourn's decision not to attend help
or hurt the cause against AIDS in Dallas? Who
is to say?Second, last March city councilpersons Lori
Palmer and Craig Holcomb initiated a meet-
ing of organizations in town that work with
AIDS patients and the cause against AIDS. The
intent was to get input as to an appropriate
response by the city to the crisis. Representa-
tives from the PWA Coalition of Dallas
attended. The Oak Lawn Counseling Center
was present. The Lesbian/Gay Political Coali-
tion attended, along with the AIDS ARMS
Network. William Wayboum and the leaders
of DGA took a position not to attend. Why?
Was this action a measure of the DGA's
commitment to fight AIDS? Who is to say?
I think William Waybourn and others in a
leadership role in the DGA know that many in
the lesbian and gay community of Dallas
appreciate the many things they do for our
cause in the city. However, William and
"William
Waybourn's letter
seems to imply that if
he or the DGA is not
aware of all behind-
the-scenes efforts to
help and support the
cause against AIDS,
then either (1) it's not
really happening, or
(2) it shouldn't be
happening. Both are
ungracious and cruel
responses.
Furthermore, is
William purporting to
judge what is 'enough'
effort against AIDS
and what is the 'right'
effort? God help us not
to be judgmental."

appropriate others should know that the type
of response to my comments about applaud-
ing Fran McNulty only reinforces the image
that sometimes the DGA can say and do some
stupid things. These unnecessary digs also
may be the reason why most of Dallas' lesbian
and gay leaders choose not to be a part of the
DGA and put their loving, caring and needed
energies elsewhere.Don Baker
