Buchmeyer said he was struck by
Baker's "sincere and credible" testimo-
ny about the fear and discrimination
which gay people face in their coming-
out.
The 21.06 case had personal reso-
nance for Buchmeyer as well.
"Don Baker taught me a lot about the
tragedy and injustice of 21.06 . . . He
taught me the most valuable lesson of
my life," he said, noting that a few
years later, his own son, John Paul,
would come out to him.
In the evening's other awards, Jack
Evans and George Harris joined
Vivienne Armstrong and Louise Young
to accept the Robert Schwab award for
their long-term activism for the com-
munity.
Keeping with the theme of couples,
Evans at first toyed with crowd about
his 36-year relationship.
"I'm not going to say how long
we've been together, but CommerceStreet was two-way, and Tim Seelig had
hair," he quipped.
He also recalled the progress which
has been made for gay rights in the last
twenty years.
"When we came to Dallas, you could
be arrested for touching another man in
a bar," said Evans. "There is not much
you can do individually, but there is a
lot we can do together."
Nursing teacher Fela Alfaro was rec-
ognized for her AIDS advocacy work
and her service on several health com-
missions, including the local Ryan
White care planning council. She also
recently assisted THRF in translating its
"AIDS and the law" brochure into
Spanish.
Rising to accept recognition for her
AIDS-related work, Alfaro joined Jose
Plata, Chris Luna, and Hector Garcia
onstage, joking: "All I can say is:
'Shucks - three wonderful Latino men
and none of them are available."'
Turning serious, she was moved toBoard members of the Texas Human Rights Foundation. President Hector Garcia is
in the back row on the left.8 DALLAS VOICE
Fruitful occasion -
