Wes Crowder, president and co-founder of Southwest Viatical, the only
viatical company located in Dallas, believes that when people become
educated about the viatical process, they will be less skeptical. Many people
are concerned about their privacy. Because of this, apprehensive until thfind
out th rivacy is assurred, he said.
"The attitude on our industry has changed," he said. "I the beginning,
people looked at us like we were vultures. (At the time) they needed a positive
outlook."
Crowder says sellers are now viadicating from a more hopeful
perspective. They realize viaticating does not mean the end of life. More and
more sellers are using the money return to school, travel or pay for experimental
therapies that insurance does not cover, he said.
"One guy just wanted a black Corvette," Crowder said. "So he bought one
and later came back to show it to me. I think that added years to his life."
Crowder said his company has viadicated nearly 150 people since being
f rmed in May 1993. This year alone, Southwest Viatical has handled nealy 40
cases. The comany is now considering handling the cases of people suffering
from terminal diseases other than AIDS.
"I hope they cure AIDS and I'm stuck with a lot of policies," he said.
"Someday, that will happen and I will be glad to move onto something else. Until
then, we are going to continue to viadicate and help people reach their dreams,
whether it's a Corvette or a trip to Greece."AA.
