Looking like a flame-charred death s head, a St.)Louis
and Southwestern Railroad locomotive sits on a siding
in the east Texas town of Tyler. Three crewmen
aboard the train died in the flame-filled cab of the
engine after the train smashed into a loaded crude
oil transporter in the tiny hamlet of Chandler, 10
miles southwest of Tyler this morning. Dead are
53 year old J. T. Piles, the engineer; 67 year old
K, P. Jones, 4:brakeman, and NMIH. E. Malone
the fireman. Piles and Jones died in the flaming
. Malone jumped from the train, but died enroute
to a Tyler hospital. After the collision, the
train, spurting gouts of flame, rumbled down the
track, coming to halt near an underpass.

tragedy in Chandler. The transporter was loaded with
