The Convention Center verdict is announced at the Civil
Courts Building in Fort Worth. And while the sentence
is stiffer than originally expected, officials says it
could have been a lot worse. County commissioners were
warned last week that bids to build the center might be
15 to 20 percent higher than originally estimated,
primarily because of the shrply-rising cost of con-
struction
materials.) The warning came from Arlington
Mayor Vanderiff, who heads the center's board of mana-
gers. And the mayor knew what he was talking about.
The bids, opened by Judge Simpson and announced by
Preston Geren one of the center's architects, total
ten-million-four-hundred-thousand-dollars. This is
about one million dollars more than the county has
available for construction costs. And Judge Simpson
says he had hoped the bids would run around EIGHT-and-
a-half-million. The apparent low bid for general con-
struction, about six-million-eight-hundred-thousand-
dollars, was submitted by U Cadenhead-Childs,
