This is Ron Marcello interviewing Mrs. Elizabeth Murphy
for the North Texas State University Oral History
Collection. The interview is taking place on May 30,
1977, in Denton, Texas. I'm interviewing Mrs. Murphy
in order to get her reminiscences and experiences and
impressions while she was an Army nurse at Tripler General
Hospital during and after the Japanese attack at Pearl
Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Now Mrs. Murphy, to begin this interview, would you
just very briefly give me a biographical sketch of your-
self. In other words, tell me when you were born, where
you were born, your education--things of that nature.
Just be very brief and general.
I was born in Boise, Idaho, on April 2, 1917. I went
through nurses' training at Saint Luke's Hospital in
Boise, Idaho. I joined the Army in 1940 and was stationed
at Fort Lewis, Washington. In September of 1941, I was
sent to the Hawaiian Islands and was stationed at Tripler
General Hospital.
