is concentrating its efforts. We are highly in favor of it and
more of it. We couldn't do without real music. But not on the
footbnll field! A band that can play classics as our band can is
capable also of playing lighter football music. And on the field
footbnll music is what we want I I
Since it is the chief factor toward arousing spirit let's have
a band that has some pep and can play music that will send our
team running for victory.

UNDER THE ICING . . . WHAT?
Molly was so excited. This was her first cake. She was making
it as a surprise for her father whose birthday was that very day.
She planned to give the cake to him at the evening meal and
even now as she contemplated over the prospect she could see
his face as it lighted with joy over the thoughtfulness and love
of his little girl for him. With speed and vigor she mixed the in-
gredients. She beat the mixture in the big blue bowl as she had
seen her mother do so many times. She was not even going to
let her mother help her tho this cake was to be all hers.
The batter was mixed poured into the pan and placed into

hope that they are satisfied with the way things are being con-

with the work that is being done in the school.
This day is primarily for the exes. The work of the school
has been suspended in their honor. All of the facilities of the

this thought in mind she took it from the oven and spread over
it a rich thick chocolate icing.

in her closet and began to dream of her father's surpise.

have learned to love the old college and the work that it did for
them. They naturally want it to be first in everything from
football to the spiritual life of the students. Let's speak to them
about this while we have a chance to save the college from further
embarrassment.
Our battle is not going to be easy. Anything that is worth-
while can not be accomplished or attained without a great deal
of work. We will have setbacks and will be fought by those
forces which have made our student life so corruptable. But our
fight is worthwhile and we all know what it is ! We are working
for principles that have stood for something in the lives of men
for almost two thousand years. We are working to attain the
ideals that have made men better and finer for many years and
will continue to do so as iong as time goes on. And when we have
won our battle what then? We will have a school that will be
second to none a school that will be looked up to and admired
and a school that we will be proud to attend.
Is the goal not worth working for? S.
WHERE IS 'PERUNA'?
"Peruna" . . . "Dinah". Don't those words bring a pleasant
memory to all those who have attended Daniel Baker previous
to this year? Somehow the mere mention of the words touches
a chord of our heart strings. Incidentally that string had about
rusted hadn't it? or have you been living in memory? You would
have to have done a lot of reminescing or you couldn't have heard
those tunes.
A band puts the spirit into a football game. When a good band
plays some peppy number the supporters of a team increase
their enthusiasm and double their efforts to show the boys on
the field that there is a grand stand full of loyal people wanting
a victory urging them on that there is a twelfth man.
"Peruna" . . . trumpet trio . . . "Dinah" . . . Those are Daniel
Baker's fight songs. Those are the songs that make boys on the
football field want to win. Those are the songB that make Daniel
Baker rooters shout for a victory. Those are the songs that help
to make Daniel Baker spirit.
But we haven't heard them at all this year. Not once have
the clear notes of a trumpet shot across the stadium playing
"Feruna". And we want to hear that sound.
It isn't that we object to the type of music on which the band
but she really is one of the faculty
members.
Mrs. Monday has charge of the
home economics department this year
having filled the vacancy left when
Mrs. Eula McFarland resigned. She
is doing her job very well too. The
home economics department Is much
larger this year than It has been In
the previous years and it is rapidly
becoming one of the largest depart-
ments in the school. Under Mrs. Mon-
day's valuable guidance the room
that had heretofore been used as a
lecture room has been converted Into
a combination dining room-living
room. A new living room suite has
been secured. New shades cover the
winodws in both this room and the
home economics laboratory. With this
new furniture the old rooms look like
new. Mrs. Montlay however Is still
working on them. She hopes to obtain
new rugs easy chairs and more
living room furniture.
Mrs. Monday Is well qualified for
the position she now holds. She re-
ceived her Bachelor of Science in
home economics from East Texas
State Teachers College. Later she re-
ceived a second B. S. from Texas
State College for Women. Her masters
degree in home economics was also
received from TSCW. She has studied
at other times at Columbia Univer-
sity. For several years prior to her
coming to Daniel Baker Mrs. Mon-
day has taught the subject of her

Mrs. Monday's youthful appearance
certainly Is a disguise for the fact that
she has a son Daymon who is en-
rolled as a freshman in Daniel Baker
this year.
Besides her many home economics
classes and the duties that accompany
that position Mrs. Monday is the
sponsor of the Blllie Co-Eds girls'
pep squad and the SOS girls' social
organization of Daniel Baker. Mrs.
Monday Is the most enthusiastic
member of the group. She is con-
stantly working on new Ideas for their
stunts and is always ready with a
suggestion for ways of making more
of the much needed money to pay for
the girls' uniforms. Not only does she
offer suggestions but when these
have been adopted as their tasks
Mrs. Monday does most of the work
toward raising the money. She is al-
ways either baking a cake for the
organization sewing on a blanket up
to her elbows in doughnut dough
making plans for a fiarty or with the
girls at their drill. And Mrs. Monday
Is their severest critic.
All In all Mrs. Monday freshman
on the DBC faculty this year is one
of the Hill Billies' most faithful back-
ers. Daniel Baker is proud of the
fact that she is a member of the fine
group of men and women that com-
pose its faculty.

(Editor's Note This Is the second
of a series of articles the first of
which appeared lost week.)
Last week you got an Insight Into
the 'answer to a maiden's prayers.
Since then wc have been deluged with
requests for a little dope on what we
boys admire in the opposite sex. Well
I'll tell you we boys may be a bit
screwy about our choice of dames.
Wc might fall for uny femm that
smiled at us twice or vice-versa. Then
again wc might go nuts about some
little twist that would hardly even
look at us much less smile. Well here
I nm at the end of this paragraph and
I haven't said anything very Informa
tive yet.
This proposed dream girl which is
beginning to assume a hazy form In
my brain such ns it Is would be a
composite of several features. She
would have the vivacity of Ginger
Rogers the Innocent appeal of Lo-
rctta Young the demurness of Myrna
Loy ttic allurement of Oarbo and
Dietrich and the vibrant personality
of Claudctte Colbert. Maybe we're
shooting high. Perhaps we don't really
expect to find all this in one girl but
any fellow that the love-bug has
clamped down upon will probably tell
you that the object of his affections
has all of these characteristics. You
know that old saying that love Is
blind. Well that nln't no lie.
Here is a tip for you skirts. When
one of these guys gets the idea in his
head that he Is ready to settle down
for life with some little jane he
isn't going to pick one of these dizzy
little fluffs that drinks his liquor
laughs at every one of his jokes
muggs him permiscuously and Indul-
ges In other giddy goings-on. A boy
hits to have plenty of respect for a
plil before he will go through with
these "Love-hnnor-and-obcy" rites.
Certainly wc all admire this breath
taking beauty. It is a settled fact that
It helps a lot but anybody will tell
you that personality Is about half of
looks. You have seen some new daz-
zling doll appear on tho scene midst a
bevy of "oh's and ah's" and various
and sundry exclamations from on
looking males. They may rave about
her for a week. Then suddenly you'll
hear someone state that after thinking
it over they didn't see so much class
in this new babe. This becomes a more
or less general opinion and the girl
begins to slip. She lacks personality.
This beautiful but dumb type is no
go. Looks soon fade and if she hasn't
anything to fall back on she is in a
hard way.
We have stated several factors that
are very desirable in a girl and of
ourse there Is only one in a million
If uny that will have all of these
characteristics. But please girls if
these things do not come very natur-
ally do not try too hard to acquire
them. Above all be yourself. I can
frankly say that I have never seen a
girl that didn't have something like-
able about her. Find out what this in-
dividual characteristic is. Do your
host to develop it.
Some day the real thing will come
along. One never knows docs one.

They have forms.
They are bold face type.
They always have the last word.

They have a great deal of Influence.
They are well worth looking over.
You cannot believe everything they

They are much thinner than they

students with an average above "C"
spent less time studying and more
time relaxing than the majority of
those receiving lower grades. It also
Indicated that coeds spend almost aa
much time at their dressing tables
as they do studying.
