states, is more cows of 4,000 pounds or better miik pro- *
duction. and fewer scrubs. A few poor producers in ai
herd of good cows will eat up the profit of the entire
herd. Two real producers will make a profit where any
number of scrubs will record a loss. The more scrubs!
the greater the loss. The dairying interests of the
Southwest would be greatly benefited if 75 per cent of
the cows being fed and milked were shipped to the can-
ning factories of the packing companies.
Fortunately for the Southwest there are some of the
best herds of purebred dairy cattle in the country right j
at home, and some of the best-known breeders in the
United States are-making an effort to establish the
dairy industry on a paying basis in this section. Bull;
calves of the bt.-t breeding can be had at small cost, and
thus is the opportunity afforded to build up a herd with-
in a perk d of a few years. Those who do not want to
wait the process of building up a herd from grade stock
can purchase purebreds of foundation stock. The South-
west is now in position to build the dairy industry on a
paying and permanent basis.—Farm and Ranch.
