community motored to Weslaco Sat-
urday evening.
The Misses Nell and Edna Brooks,
Miss Iris Chandler and the Messrs.
Burgess and Edward Bartlett mo-
tored to- Mercedes Saturday evening.
The Misses Joy Bailey, Florence
Burgess and Messrs. William Schupp
and Manfon Ellis motored to McAllen
Saturday evening.
Church was well attended at the
Carlson school house last Sunday.
Rev. Reist gave a splendid talk on
“Double Social Standard.”
Tom Ellis’ father spent Sunday at
the Jones home on Mile 17-4.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ellis and daugh-
ter Novelle spent Sunday afternoon
at the D. G. Bartlett home.
Dean Gates visited at the Bartlett
home Sunday afternoon.
Alvin McQuay spent Sunday after-
noon at the Wells home on miles 16%
and 3.
There was a large attendance at
Christian Endeavor Sunday evening.
Mr. Rowe was leader.
Mrs. Ewing Clark and children
were callers at the D. G. Bartlett
home on Monday.
Mrs. I. A. White called at the
Bartlett home Monday afternoon.
A baseball meeting of the Inde-
pendent baseball club was held at
the school house Monday evening.
Play practice was held at the
school house Monday evenong.
Messrs. Dean Gates, H. F. Reist,
I. A. White and D. G. Bartlett met
with the Chamber of Commerce at
Weslaco Monday evening, to discuss
gravity questions.
H. F. Reistan d children, Maurine
and Robert were callers in Weslaco
Tuesday afternoon.
The baseball team went to Merce-
des to practice on Tuesday afternoon.
Messrs. J. W. McQuay, W. B.
Rowe and I. A. White attended the
farmers meeting at Ebony Heights
Tuesday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Dean Gates and
daughter Gretchen were among those
present at the meeting at Ebony
Heights Tuesday. evening.
The baseball team played ball with
Mercedes Wednesday and were de-
feated, the score being 5 to 11.
Chester Liljestrand, son of Mr
and Mrs. J. A. Liljestrand, who has
been employed in a lumber company’s
office at Breckenridge, Texas, has
returned to his home in the Valley
for a vacation.

Sixty-one members of the Hidalgo
and Cameron County Chapters of De
Molay enjoyed the all day meeting of
the order wliich was held at Merce-
des of Friday. June 22. The day’s pro-
gram opened in the morning with the
conferring of the first degree upon
four candidates, among whom was
Francis Utley of Mercedes. Imme-
diately following this ceremony the
boys adjourned to the Harriet Clay-
comb grammar school, where lunch-
eon was served by the ladies of the
Christian Church. Rev. J. L. Rea of
Mercedes and Mr. Ball of Browns-
ville addressed the two chapters at
| this time.
Following luncheon the second de-
gree was conferred upon the morning-
initiates by the Hidalgo County
Chapter.
An exciting seven-inning baseball
game between the two chapters fur-
nished the thrills for the afternoon.
Despite the fact that the Cameron
County boys put up a game fight,
they were hopelessly outclassed by
the Hidalgo County athletes who
came out on the long end of a 15 to
2 score.
After the ball game adjournment
was taken to Lake Campacuks where
a watermelon feast ana swimming
party was enjoyed.
Members of the Masonic fraternity
who attended the meeting were Mes-
sers Howard and Graham of Mission;
Moritz and Davison of McAllen;
King, Ball, Holliday of Brownsville,
and several members, of the Mercedes
lodge.
