Theta Chi quarterback Tony Love, Denton senior,
tries to get off a pass over the leaping Lee Clark,
Houston junior, of Lambda Chi Alpha. Houston
sophomore Jim Nippier of Lambda Chi also
charges in, trying to get past the block of Theta
Chi’s Jeff McKnight, Whiteoak sophomore.

the men’s flag football semis.

Denton senior Steve Harris broke
loose for a twisting 7-yard run on the
next-to-last play of overtime Wednesday
to give the Beavers the men’s intramural
flag football championship over
Lambda Chi Alpha.
The two teams went into overtime tied
12-12 after the Beavers missed a chance
to win it with 51 seconds left in the
fourth quarter.
The Beavers, who were playing in the
finals for the second straight year, had
driven to the Lambda Chi 2-yard line,
but Dallas sophomore Kevin McKin-
ney’s second-down pass was intercepted
by Lambda Chi’s Jim Nippier, Houston
freshman, to end the threat.
That sent the game into overtime.
Starting at midfield, the teams ran off
eight plays, alternating possession on
each play. The team which had ad-
vanced the ball into the other team’s ter-
ritory at the end of the eight plays would
be the winner.
Harris, the Beaver quarterback, tos-
sed an incomplete pass on the first snap,
then Lambda Chi QB Gary Horn, Dal-
las freshman, also threw an incomple-
tion.
On the third play, Harris hit Waco
senior Myles Taylor with a 3-yard pass
to move the ball to the Lambda Chi 37.

Maple Sugar Sweetens Late, 7-6

Although it looked like the game
would end in a scoreless tie, both teams
broke for touchdowns in the last 37 sec-
onds as Maple Sugar downed the
Pro’s. 7-6, for the women's intramural
flag football championship.
With less than a minute to play the
Pro’s took over around the 40-yard line
to begin the drive which everyone
thought had won the game.
On the first play of the drive, Bedford
sophomore Paula Ward completed a
pass to Fort Worth senior Laura
Morton. The next play was a series of
completed passes from Ward to Morton
to Grand Prairie junior Nancy Erickson.
Then Morton scampered in for the score
after grabbing a pass from Ward.
The Pro’s attempted a one-point con-
version, but the pass intended for
Morton from Ward was incomplete.
MAPLE Sl^GAR then took over and
began its scoring drive. On the first play

championship game as the Beavers
defeated B&G 8-6 Wednesday.
Harris picked off a pass thrown by
Ann Osmus, Bedford sophomore, and
returned it 74 yards for a TD in the clos-
ing minute of the first half to put the
Beavers ahead 8-0.
The Beavers had gone ahead 2-0 in
the first quarter when B&G quarterback
Danny Kasper, Corpus Christi senior,
threw an incomplete pass in his own end
zone for a safety.
After the Beavers were held on the fol-
lowing set of downs, B&G took over on
its own 20-yard line. It drove the ball
down to the Beaver 4-yard line, but then
Harris made his big interception return.
The second half opened with an in-
terception by Diana Jett, Dallas junior,
which gave the B&G the ball on the
Beaver 20-yard line. This drive stalled on
the Beaver 3-yard line.
After B&G intercepted a Susan Keif-
fer, Dallas freshman, pass on its ow n 19-
yard line, it mounted its only scoring
drive of the day moving 61 yards in 6
plays with Osmus throwing to Muenster
junior Randy Wolf for a 14-yard
touchdown.
B&G held the Beavers on their next
possession and took over on the B&G six
after a 54-yard punt by Harris.
Then B&G mounted its last drive
which ended on the Beaver 10-yard line
when Kevin McKinney, Dallas
sophomore, intercepted an Osmus pass.
The Beavers held on to the ball for the
final minute to clinch the victory.
McLean, Va., sophomore Patsy
Alderete failed to find a receiver down-
field. But on the next play she completed
a pass to Henderson senior Kathy Wil-
liams, who ran in for the touchdown
with 16 seconds left in the game.
Alderete completed a pass to Denise
Machac, West, senior, for the conver-
sion, bringing the score 7-6.
THE PRO’S then took the ball with
10 seconds to go and attempted a long
pass which was intercepted by Williams,
who held on to it long enough to run out
the clock.
“It was a tough game,” said Maple
Sugar Coach Gilford King.

Lambda Chi QB Horn threw another
incompletion, then Harris scrambled for
eight yards to put the ball at the Lambda
Chi 29.
But the frats got the yardage back
when Horn nailed Garland senior Ron-
nie Shearer with a 12-yarder to move it
into Beaver territory at the 39.
That set up Harris’ run. He was
almost caught at the 40, but he broke
free around the right side and scampered
to the Lambda Chi 34.
Horn’s pass on the eighth and last
play of overtime fell short at the
Lambda Chi 39.
The Beavers took the lead late in the
first period when Pasadena senior Tim
Vaughn rambled 61 yards with a half-
back pass. Vaughn broke out of a crowd
at the Lambda Chi 35 and took it in.
But Lambda Chi came back on its
next possession to tie it, moving 60 yards
in six plays.
Lambda Chi got another TD just
before halftime when Horn threw a 3-
yard touchdown pass to Dallas
freshman Greg Howell. The extra point
pass was off target again and Lambda
Chi led 12-6 at intermission.
Lambda Chi almost ran its lead to two
touchdowns late in the third quarter,
driving to the Beaver 6, but Harris, who
had two interceptions, picked off a
third-down pass in the end zone.
The Beavers then marched it 60 yards
in seven plays, aided by a 15-yard
penalty on Lambda Chi, to tie it up
again. Harris got the touchdown on the
first snap of the fourth quarter on one of
those weird flag football plays.
The Beavers shifted three linemen and
one back 15 yards to the left of the cen-
ter, leaving only center Paul Prescher,
Waco sophomore, and QB Harris on the
right side of the field. Harris took the
snap, faked a pass to the left side, faked
a pass to Prescher down the middle, then
ran in for the score from eight yards out.
