Recreation facility opens for bowling, billiards, games
By JACQIJE JOHNSON
Staff Writer
Entertainment in Denton may seem
limited in comparison to what Dallas
and Fort Worth have to offer, but the
new Brunswick Recreation Center and
Varsity Bowl near Golden Triangle Mall
adds another choice to Denton’s amuse-
ment attractions.
“People come to the facility mainly
lor bowling,” Kathy Foster, the center’s
program director, said Monday. “This
past Saturday night there were 60 to 80
names on the waiting list to bowl.’’
Foster said people have waited in line
to play pool, and kids come in and keep
the gameroom full.
“And a few people just drop by the
lounge to relax after work and to visit
with friends,” she said.
An automatic scorer is the main
feature of the new bowling lanes, Foster
said. Each lane has its own video display
with an intercom and an overhead score
display. After each game, the computer
prints out a score sheet for the bowlers.
“People are a little bit afraid of the
computers when they come in,” Foster
said, “but once they have used the com-
puter for two or three games it becomes
old hat.”
Denton bowling leagues have already
moved to the new Brunswick facility,
and this leaves the Brunswick Holiday
Lanes on University Drive open for
public bowling most of the time, she
said.
“Brunswick only leases the building
on University,” she said, “and although
renovation was done on that facility, we
couldn’t do all the things we have done
here.” In addition to the lanes, the
facility has a children's playroom,
meeting room, snack bar, electronic
game room, billiard room, lounge and
pro shop.
Although the leagues and one NT
bowling tournament have moved to the
new Brunswick lanes, NT bowling
classes will remain at the Holiday
Lanes, Jean Pekara, supervisor of NT
physical education events activity
programs, said Monday.

“Keeping the classes at the older
bowling alley will hold down the cost for
the student,” Pekara said.
For the Jan. 7 grand opening, the
center sponsored a bowling tournament
to raise money for muscular dystrophy,
and a young man with muscular
dystrophy bowled from his wheelchair.
Brunswick personnel are willing to work
with disabled people, Foster said.
"We don’t have the ramps or equip-
ment, but many groups have their own
special equipment, and we’re glad to ac-
commodate them,” she said. "When
people from the Denton State School
have come bowling, they bring their own
equipment. They have these bowling
balls with handles that collapse into the
ball once it's released.”
“There is open bowling from 9 a.m.to
4 p.m. during the week,” Foster said
“League bowling is seven days a week,
and it usually starts in the evening at 6
p.m."
Daytime bowling costs $1.10, and
evening bowling is $1.45 for adults and
$1.10 for children and senior citizens.
On Saturday, Sunday and holidays
bowling costs $1.45 for everyone
Brunswick Recreation Center and
Varsity Bowl is located at 2200 San
Jacinto, behind the Golden Triangle
Mall and United Artists movie theater.
