IF I WE&E YOU, SIR.
If I were you, Sir, t,
£ would not sue, Sir)
Vor any woman’s love day alter day;
I'd never stand, Sir,
At her command, Sir,
year Iff and out in this fond, fodlish way;
Across my face, Sir,
I’d have the grace, Sir,
Or mother-wit, to pull a gayer mash,
And wait to find, Sir,
What was her mind, Sir,
Befdtte I’d grovel at her feet to ask.
All very well, Sir,
For you to tell, Sir,
Of that grand poet in the olden time,
Whose fine advice, Sir,
W as sb concise. Sir.
In that immbrtal strain of gallant rhyme;
It ddefc hot fit, Sir,
Your cafcfe a bit, Sir 5
He never meant a man should pray and pray,
With such an air. Sir,
Of poor despair, Sir,
for any woman’s love day after day.
If you will read, Sir,
The verse with heed, Sir,
You’ll see it runs as clearly as it may,
That every man. Sir,
Should take his answer
With manly courage, be it yea hay.
Then cease your sighs, Sit;
No man’s a prize, Sir,
In any woman’s sight, just let me say*
Who’s not too high, sir,
To sigh and die, Sir,
For any woman’s love day alter day.
—Nora Perry, in Harper’s lor April.
THE JETTIES.
Captain Eads has succeeded in
deepening the channel of the South
Pass from eight feet to twenty-two
feet. The Southwest Pass formerly
the only practicable pass giving not
over eighteen feet. Tug boats
were used to pull ships over the bar
at great cost. The tug boat com-
panies have thrown every obstacle
in the way of Captain Eads by
applying for injunctions to stop the
work on the jetties, and thus ruin
the commerce of New Orleans.
The present depth is stated as fol-
lows in the official report of Cap-
tain M. R. Brown, rendered by
order of the secretary of war, and
dated April 3d : April 3d there was
a channel twenty-two feet deep, at
average flood tide, between the
South Pass jetties to deeper water
in the Gulf of Mexico. Its least
width was 70 feet, lacking a width
of 200 feet for a length of 150 feet.
A practical channel, with a least
depth of about 23 feet, existed
throughout the main pass and be-
tween the jetties. At high tide of
the day these depths were increased
0.5 feet, and at low water lessened
0.8 feet. At the head passes a least
depth of 21 feet at average flood tide
was found on the 14th of March.
At the present stage of the river
about 22 feet, can be carried through
through the head of passes at high
tide.

The San Antonio Herald gives an
account of the shooting of James
Musgrave by Mr. Geo. M. Martin,
the editor oi the Pleasanton Stock
Journal:
In the Stock Journal Mr. Martin
reflected in severe terms on the con-
duct of Mr. Masgrave in sundry
matters, and Musgrave made re-
peated threats against him in conse-
quence. Mr. Martin, anticipating
an attack, carried a pistol. Mr.
Pleasanton came behind Mr. Martin,
as he was going to his dinner, and
seizing him by the hair, drew his
head back and struck him in the
left eye. Mr. Martin broke away,
but was again assailed, and an at-
tempt was made by Musgrave to
draw his knife. On break-
ing away the second time
Mr. Martin drew his pis'toi and shot
Musgrave in the neck, the ball strik-
ing his spine and ranging down-
ward. Musgrave then closed in for
the third time, and seizing Mr. Mar-
tin by the throat, bit the forefinger
of his l^ft hand, lacerating it terri-
bly, Mr.^Iartin in the meantime us-
ing his pistol in striking his assail-
ant vigorous blows about the head,
vhich finally had the effect to cause
lira, to open his mouth and release
iis grip on Mr. Martin’s throat.
Musgfave’s wound was dressed,
and the ball extracted from his
shoulder, and he now lies in a pre-
carious condition. Martin has not
been arrested. .
