Ephesians 2:1-5
“And you hath he
quickened, who were dead in
trespasses and sins; wherein in
time past ye walked
according to the course of
this world, according to the
prince of the power of the
air, the spirit that now
worketh in the children of
disobedience: among whom
we all had our conversation in
times past in the lust of our
flesh, fulfilling the desires of
the flesh and of the mind;
and were by nature the
children of wrath, even as
others. But God, who is rich
in mercy, for his great love
wherewith he loved us, even
when we were dead in sins,
hath quickened us together
with Christ, by grace ye are
saved.”
The great life which God
offers man is called Salvation
and it is the theme of the
entire Bible. That Salvation is
provided by the grace of God.
Grace is that love that reaches
out to sinful, undeserving
man and provides redemption
for him. One of the clearest
presentations of this saving
grace of God in the entire
Bible is found in the opening
verses of the second chapter
of Ephesians. Here we see
God’s great love making
provisions for man’s greatest
need. Let us think of the
Scripture we have chosen as:
Sin, how terrible! Grace, how
marvelous! and Salvation,
how wonderful!
Sin, how terrible! These
are strange words in a modern
world. Sin terrible? The
world would have men
believe that sin is smart,
attractive, fascinating and
enchanting. The idea that sin
is terrible is sneered at,
scoffed at and ridiculed.
Many Christians smile at sin,
condone sin and indulge in
sin. However, despite all this,
sin is terrible. The Bible
reveals how terrible it really
is. Moreover its disastrous
results can be seen in world
history, past and present.
In our scripture there are
three pictures of sin which
reveal just how ruinous sin
really is. The first verse says:
Sin is death - “and you hath
he quickened (made alive)
who were dead in trespasses
and sins.” This reveals the
sinner’s state: He is dead unto
righteousness. He is separated
from God, he is dead
spiritually. Everyone knows
the meaning of physical
death. It is separation. Loved
ones who are dead can no
longer walk with us, can no
longer talk with us or have
fellowship with us. As far as
our physical relationships in
this world are concerned,
death is the divider. It brings
separation which is feared
and dreaded. So also spiritual
death brings separation from
God. Man cannot walk with
God, serve God, obey God, or
do God’s will until he is made
alive. This life comes through
Jesus Christ, and gives us
victory over death.
In the second verse we
find another picture of sin.
Here sin is portrayed as an
act. It is an act of
disobedience to the will of
God, and an act of obedience
to the will of the devil. While
men are dead as far as
walking with God, they are
very much alive in their walk
with Satan.
Ephesians 2:2 - Where in
in time past ye walked
according to the course of
this world, according to t^e
prince of the power of the
air.
Here the lost person is
walking in the world’s way.
This is not God’s way. As we
look around us we can see
hate, deceit, dishonesty,
drunkenness, murder and so
many other sinful acts that it
would be impossible to name
them. Surely we must admit
this is not God’s way. This is
the broad way which, Jesus
described as leading to
destruction. Men and women
cursing, lying, blaspheming
and doing the many evil
things they do. And again we
must admit this is not God’s
way.
The second verse tells us
more: Men are walking
according to the prince of the
power of the air, the spirit
that now worketh in the
children of disobedience. This
is the Devil himself. And lost
people are walking in his way.
Perhaps you are thinking,
- “Don’t classify me with those
evil people of the world. I am
not guilty of any of those
things. I am not walking in
the devil’s way.” Well, the
Bible says, “Whosoever shall
keep the whole law, and yet
offend in one point, he is
guilty of all.” James 2:10. If
you are rejecting God’s will in
your life, if you’re rejecting
our Lord and saviour Jesus
Christ, if you are rejecting the
dictates of the Holy Spirit,
then you are guilty of all.
You are walking in the devil’s
way. Satan could care less
that you are not any of the
aforementioned things.
In the last part of the third
verse we are told we are “by
nature children of wrath.”
Why is the whole universe
under the curse of sin? The
Bible says we have inherited
the sinful nature of our
fathers. As I held my first
born baby daughter in my
arms I suppose it was only
natural to think she was
a little Angel. But as she grew
older and began to demand
more and more attention, I
realized she was not an Angel
at all. She was a little
Tumbleson, and was by
nature a Child of Wrath. If
you were to take a baby
rattlesnake the moment it
was born and feed it the
choicest tidbits, put it in a
box lined with soft cotton,
decorate the box with pretty
ribbons, sing lullabys to it,
pamper it in every way, the
moment it had a chance, it
would bite you. Why?
Because it is a rattlesnake by
nature.
As we sum up the three
verses in Ephesians we find
thiee truths: Sin is a state
(dead to righteousness), Sin is
an act (disobedience to God
and obedience to the devil)
and Sin is a nature (enmity
toward God).
Grace, how marvelous!
How we can thank God
this passage of scripture does
not end with the third verse.
Indeed there is something
more. Verse four says, “But
God, who is rich in mercy,
for his great love wherewith
he loved us.” But God — are
there any more meaningful
words in the Bible? Men dead
in sin ... But God. Men
walking in the devil s way in
rebellion against Him . .. But
God. Man a sinner lost,
condemned, deserving
hell . .. But God. Rich in His
mercy in that He loves us
with a great love spoken of as
grace.
In the fifth verse God says,
“He, even when we were dead
in sins, hath quickened us
together, with Christ, by
grace are ye saved.” Grace is
the unlimited, unmerited
favor of God to the utterly
underserving.
Salvation, how wonderful!
Our scripture not only
presents the terribleness of
sin and the marvel of Grace,
it goes farther to reveal the
wonder of God’s Salvation.
By Grace ye are saved. The
Bible says, “Even when we
were dead in sins” God loved
us. When we were dead in sin
and headed for destruction,
God loved us so much that
He gave His Son on Calvary
that Hs might say, “He hath
raised us up together in
heavenly places in -Christ
Jesus.”
You can take advantage of
this wonderful Love of God,
this Mercy of God and this
Grace of God today. You can
claim the Grace of God as
your very own with the
assurance of eternity in
Heaven with God.
