Board member grateful
Dear Editor,
As president of the school board, I want to congratulate and thank
Dr. Ramon Tanguma our chief administrator, all principals, teachers,
directors, counselors, supervisors, co-ordinators, business office and
staff, tax office and staff, secretaries, cleiks, aides, custodians, main-
tenance department transportation department parental involvement,
taxpayers, board members and every single person that contributed to
our school district to reach our main goal in acquiring a "Fully
Accredited School."
I know that every single one of you worked very hard for the last
four years to accomplish this goal and believe me it was for a very
important cause "Our School Children."
1 also want to thank Dr. Nick Vallado our school monitor last year
from T.E.A. who guided our district in the right direction. I hope that
we can all continue to work together as a team to bring our school
children the best quality education.
Again, congratulations and thanks to all of you.
Socorro V. Salinas

With scores problem defined,

2 eachers, a good number of them, have told us that much of
■ the problem with performance at local schools lies with
students and parents. If that is the problem, then let’s start
working on a solution.
Before proceeding further, however, let’s make one point clear. The
teachers did not say all students and all parents are a problem.
Those students who perform well are obviously not a problem. And
as teachers have said, it is usually their parents who have the greatest
interest in school.
There is an important connection here.
The basis of solving any problem is to recognize the cause.
Many students, we are told, come from troubled households where
violence and marital discord are common. The younger students bring
the worries caused by these problems into the classroom and arc unable
to concentrate on their studies.
They, moreover, distract their teacher and fellow students.
The older students from these troubled homes have developed
negative and “I don’t give a damm” attitudes. They, say teachers, do not
care to leant.
The problem is (me of “attitude, not aptitude.’’ said one teacher.
Parents of these children are the least interested in the schools. They
view the school as a convenient baby sitting service.
The schools need to attack the problem at the source. If they need
to initiate a social services component in the school so be it (so long as

Telling It
Like It Is
by Alfredo E. Cardenas, PuMUier
it is not corrupted by making it a means to place more political plums).
The district should also redouble its efforts at parental involvement.
It has been lacking in this area in the past and the need to involve par-
ents is only accentuated by the teachers remarks.
Innovative programs such as the HOSS Program (Helping One
Student Succeed) can be instrumental in addressing this problem if they
are implemented with the intent of making them work. No program will
be effective if it is not followed through.
We would be remiss if we went along with the teachers diagnosis
one hundred percent. Hie problem, of course is more complicated.
There are. afterall, teachers with attitude problems as well Teach-
ers who have given up. Teachers who never had it to begin with. Teach-
ers who are in it for the bi-weekly check.
Like not all students and parents are to blame, neither are all
teachers. Indeed, there are many good teachers in die system.
And of course there is the problem we have been complaining about
for some time - - - the lack of educational leadership. Our views on this
situation are well known. Whether something will be done about this
problem is up to the school’s trustees.
RegretaNy, thus far they have shown little inclination to address
this issue. Hopefully, they will tackle other educational concerns with
more vigor.
