The Southern Baptist convention
opens today at Jackabnville, Florida
Th© Bulletin notes that Dr. 8. P.
I
Brooks of Waco is being mentioned
frequently for th© place of the chief
- officer of the convention. A‘ wiser
choice could not be made, and all Tex-
as would be glad to see him elected.
The Bulletin has not been informed
as to the whys and wherefores for
, changing the meeting place or the op-
tical association from Brownwood, but
we do know that if they hak come to
Brown wood they would have received
far better entertainment than they
will receive at Houston or any other
place. We regret that they saw fit to
make the change.

The world moves on and each day
and week new methods are adopted
for the convenience of the public. The
latest is the announcement that meals

be before he or she enters the train.

General George W. Gordon, com-
mander in chief of the confederate
veterans said: “The time will come
* when confederate reunions will be
held no more. The old boys are pass-
away rapidly—at the rate of more
than six thousand a year. To the best
of my knowledge there are about one
hundred thousand of us left. You can
well Judge 'how many there will be
ten years hence.” Yes. just a few
years more and we will no longer
have an opportunity to honor the con-
federate soldier except in memory, and
such a thought must have come to Col.
Sheb Williams who at his own ex-^
pense took 126 of the veterans to the
Little Rock meeting. All honor to the
; confederate soldier. ^

LIES WITH THE OFFICERS. J
A consignment of four hundred fl t-.
ty pints of whiskey was signed for lit
the 8anta Anna freight office one day
last -week, by two men of the “boof-
legger” type from Brownwood.
men were immediately relieved of
package of “boozo” by the sheriff
Coleman county, who took It up tow
♦ and was assisted in destrdylng it bf
some fifty ladies of the town. Live
vigilance on the part of the officers
would lesson greatly the offenses of
this nature. With many men It is not
the wrong of breaking the law that
restrains them, but the fear of being
ennght. The' value of any law lies In
the certainty of the penalty attached.
So long as the officers who have In
charge th*- ' enforcement of laws
against th«- 1 boot legger", wink at the
violation of same, will the bootlegger
rise up and fluorlsh. But with cer-
tainty of pun is!.n • at the crime ceases.
The failure of state-wide prohibition
to he popular in, some suates lies
largely not In the error In the prin-
ciple, hat beesus*- of the failure of the
servants of the law to fulfill their
whole duty.—Albany News.

Cool, Comfortable Under-
wear for Hot Summer Days,
BROWNWOOD OF THE FUTURE.
Galveston has a worthy ambition In
that it purposes to be the best shaded
city in tho United States. The matter
is not In the hands of the muncipallty
however but is in charge of the wo-
men of the city organized under the
name of the Women's Health Protec-
tive Association. These women at the
proper time make a thorough canvass
of the city, noting the places where
trees have been planted and have died,
or where there are no trees, and then
a proposition la made to the property
owner which he can scarcely refuse.
In the city of Denver the municipal-
ity distributed free of charge last ar-
bor day approximately 16,000 trees,
giving three to each applicant who
would agree to plant and care for
them. These trees were of the kind
that thrive in Colorado and were pur-
chased b^ the city at a cost of 30c
each.
Brownwood should follow the ex-
-K ' 1 \ «
ample of Denver and Galveston and
should organize a campaign for more
shade trees. It seems, almost incon-
ceivable that any one should be indif-
ferent to the beauties of a well shaded
lawn or street but there are a great
many places in Brownwood where
there has apparently been no effort to
improve the appearances of the prop-
erty either by trees on the lawn or
along the street. As a business propo-
sition the shade tree Is of great value,
enhancing the value of any property
far more than the tree has cost in ac-
tual dollars and cents. This does not
take into account the comfort and ap-
pearance of a place so adorned, to
the man whose home is not for sale.
Ask any man. who has planted and
tended and nurtured Into maturity a
dozen shade trees about bis home
place, what value he places on those
shade frees and his reply will aston-
ish yo^. Money could not buy them.
The Bulletin hopes yet to see the
time when^every available place In
Brownwood shall be planted to trees,
and we then shall have the distinction
of living in a town noted far and
wide for its beauty. Do your part, and
your neighbor seeing your good works
will go and do likewise.

Mrs. Chaa. Hartley, 616 Franklin
St.<^Jackson. Mich., says: “I have suf-

headaches of the worst kind attended,
and the diseases got me weak, ner-
vous and in a condition so I could not
sleep. r ,
I became alarmed at my condition
as doctoring did me no benefit, i fi-

The meeting held last Tuesday by
the stockholders in the Brownwood
North and South Railroad, was well
attended, and the sentiment seemed to
be tbat almost any arrangement look-
ing to the early completion of the
road would meet the commendation
of those present. Especially anxious
for some speedy adjustment of the
matter were the delegate* from our
neighboring town ot May. who voiced
the sentiment bf that entire commun-
ity in expressing a wish for speedy
and direct connection with Brown-
wood. Th© Bulletin'man interrogated
several of them regarding the princi-
pal reason for thl9 widespread desire
to be placed in close touch with
Brownwood, and without exception
each replied it was because they would
thus be enabled to patronize Craw-
ford. iScharrenbeek & Ragan, when
needing any cleaning and pressing

ially. when wanting to order a new
suit of clothes. “Why,” said one of
